Del's Build: SLC IR/8

Ever since COVID hit last spring, barely have driven the car other than starting it and around my neighborhood. Last weekend that shockingly changed when it ran out of gas idling in the shop. Filled up a 5gal gas can with 93, couple days later went to go fill the car up with gas and had a slight window so I washed it... geez, it needed it badly. 0% chance of rain tomorrow so actually taking it to work again. Hopefully I can change that some for 2021, time will tell.

Those carbon fiber exhaust shrouds didn't remotely like the heat from the exhaust. Not sure if they would have survived without the baffles, but adding them to the tail pipes may lead to more heat build up. Oh well, was fun project anyways.

Drove this morning, 43 degrees. Felt dang good to be back in the driver's seat, even with all the attention on I-10.

One thing I failed to mention about the baffles I installed... The smell when running the car in the shop is WAY more potent (no cats) than before the baffles. My eyes will start to water if I don't turn a fan on. Didn't really expect that, will o back and snug the manifolds and v-bands. Didn't notice any smells and no eye watering when driving it this morning though.

Hey do you have any sort of a wiring diagram for the Elise lights? I want to order them but a little worried they may not work with my system. Are there 4 wires per light?

The retrofitted Elise tails were 4 wire lights due how I wanted them to operate, all 4 to operate as running and brake. There is a trailer converter wired into the Infinity system to separate the signals from the brake lights since I wanted amber signals. Mine are wired like this:

Outer lights had running, brake, signal, ground.
Inner lights had running, brake, reverse, ground.

When I ordered the GRPv3 Elise lights I swapped them out with, I used the same configuration. If you went with GRPv3 Elise lights, they will wire them internally in any configuration you want or need for your car. I really dig the GRPv3 lights for the looks and their customer service is top notch.

Nothing new to report, but looks like CarWebGuru app is doing a big update. I use this app for the front end of my android screen in the car. Found it to be most useful and easy to operate while driving. Hopefully the new app is better than the old one.

Del, quick question on using the Android with the AIM Dash. Are you able to run Torque-IO which gathers ECU data while you are also running the Aim dash? Can you provide any info on how the AIM and Android connect to the ECU? Thanks!

Ya know... I've been meaning to try that for some time, just for kicks, but never have.

Few years ago I recall reading that the OBD2 port doesn't like when the AIM is plugged into it with something else. BUT I have successfully used a Bluetooth OBD2 reader plus OBD2 gauge (can't recall brand) at the same time with y-adapter on an Android headunit running Torque app. This was on a 2000 Trans Am, LS1.

I'd be glad try it for you if you'd like, assuming I can find my y-adapter and OBD2 reader?

Thanks Del for your reply. Yes, if it is not too much trouble and whenever you can get to it would be appreciated.

Always glad to help. Just added a reminder in my phone to see if can find my stuff this weekend to test. I know I didn't throw away, just matter of finding em!

I think about this...when I'm not in the shop. BUT I did look for my OBD2 reader and splitter. I found the splitter, but not my reader yet. I honestly have no clue where I put the sucker.

The gauge was an AeroForce Interceptor, but it was not CAN-BUS version so maybe that's why they worked together. The version I have is "PT", but unsure what that stands for.

I'll keep an eye open for the reader

Well... While this isn't a shock to me, it apparently has been to everyone around me, including my wife......... I sold my SLC IR/8.

I had been kicking the idea around for a couple of months, happen to see a couple of people looking for a finished or almost finished SLC so I hit them up to see if anyone was interested in mine. First person that responded and talked to was @SeanH , we came to an agreement after the holidays were over and started the process. One thing I requested as part of the sell was to keep up-to-date on Sean's updating of this car. I can't lie, I was kinda bummed about seeing it loaded up on transport and really sucks not seeing it in the shop when I walk in.

I guess to complete the thread, I should list my excuses (ahem, I mean reasons) for selling. It's pretty apparent by my activity in my own thread, I simply just don't drive the car enough and I really hate letting it sit. My daughter is 3 now and as of now, loves cars/bikes/trucks so she enjoys car shows, C&C, etc.... she's my co-pilot when I go, my wife stays home. She loves to ride around the neighborhood in the SLC, but that got me thinking.... at 3 I definitely don't feel 100% comfortable to put her seat in the passenger seat of the SLC in her car seat. Even in a few years when she moves into a booster seat and I figured out a way to confidentially strap her in the car, I still don't think I'd feel comfortable hitting the public roads. If I had a Corvette, Viper, Porsche, etc, I "think" I'd consider letting her ride up front in them. I do not really know why, I know the SLC is definitely up to the task, just being a paranoid parent I suppose.

So from this point on, the money is put aside except for a little play money for myself and my wife. My wife truly does deserve money from the sell, she let me do this whole SLC thing without ever batting an eye at the cost. To be honest, she never asked what the total cost of it was until months after it was delivered from Allan. I'm planning on waiting a year or 2 before purchasing another fun car, hoping used car prices will have settled by then. My play money will be going to another Hayabusa to build since they finally came out with the next generation. Daughter will get a CRF50 for Christmas so between both of those builds, it'll keep me occupied and content. The last picture attached is what I call my wall of shame, all my old personalized plates since we get to keep them after selling a car. Couple of the plates have been on and off several vehicles.

I hope to remain part of the the SLC group and input info when I can. There's no doubt I'll continue to follow everyone's current builds, as well as new builds coming............including my own car. @SeanH Congrats and I hope you will start your own build thread and continue to update as progress continues! I won't spoil any of your future plans for the car, but I can't wait to see progress!

My friend used to haul his daughter (with the proper safety gear) all over the place at 3 years old in his ZO6. He was amused at how many people gave him a scowl (this IS California remember) look as he motored past. On the other hand he got quite a few "thumbs up" from the envious as well.

She is now 8 and survived all that poor parenting to become an enthusiastic mini-dirt bike rider. Dad looks forward to the day they can go on sportbike rides together

Mom likes bikes, kid does too.

(This selling your car out of the blue thing seems to be going around)

Sorry to see that journey end, hope it went to a home that wil lappreciate it as much as we all do. Good luck hunting for the next adventure!

Del, congrats on the sale. Brings back memories of driving my daughter around in my 96’ and 99’ Vettes when she was young.

Thanks for all your posts and contribution to the forum here. Lots of great ideas you have shared over the past few years has been really appreciated.

Congrats to SeanH on the purchase!

Thanks Mesa! That story is remarkably similar to how I hope the next few years go for me and my daughter. I love hearing someone did just as I want and to be honest, kinda makes me feel better about when the time comes to get her in the front seat. I fully intended to take her with me, as long as she wants to go, in whatever we end up in. Until then, she absolutely loves me picking her up in the ZL1 from daycare. While she likes the car, she always is telling me to go fast, she enjoys the Gs.

CRF50 from Santa this year, although wife won't be onboard with it so it'll just have to "show up". I already have one, so hoping we can mug the neighborhood together.

Thanks Jeff! I honestly do think SeanH will give it the home it deserves, as well as driving it like it deserves as well.

Thanks Joel! Not near as awesome as most, but hopefully some of it will help. At least I know the shallow mounted android screen was a success in our cars! Speaking of, I still owe you an answer. I did find the splitter, but for the life of me I can not find the OBD2 dongle. I plan on taking off a Friday in a few weeks when weather is nice so I can fully clean and organize the shop before I tear this bike down. If I come across it, I'll report back. I know I didn't toss it.

I didn't intend to get something remotely this fast considering it's 30s here in the morning. But the right deal popped up on a barely used '22 Hayabusa a few hours from me so I jumped on it to save a couple grand (which will go against mod money, lol). And yes that is snow on the cars at the Louisiana dealership across the road, totally did not expect snow.

Man, that's flat out awesome Kurt! I honestly have no problem with toting her in the front seat, just nowadays seems everyone is out to turn you in for doing something not necessarily illegal, but something they don't approve of. If that makes sense. On a positive note, the windows on everything but the SLC have 5% so guess no one would ever see her. =)

Of course the wife aspect to, she thinks the worse no matter what the kid and I do, lol. That can be handled at least, just when she goes shopping! lol
