All about the RCR LMP1...

NEW facility...3 times the size of the current one...

It has been a long procrastinated deal but I needed to make sure the facility was what we needed for the future , but also have room for future expansion....

How do you expect the downforce on then LMP to compare to the green SLC that won all those races last year?

Do you think the LMP will be easier or more difficult to built than a track only SLC? Actually I'm trying to chose between your GT40 for the street or an SLC /LMP for the track. I love all three cars, but can only do one in the immediate future. Can you rank all three in build difficulty for a first timer?

Thanks,
Justin H

Slc seems to be the best of both worlds but how do you choose from such great cars. We need a buy one get one free sale :)

build difficulty is likely highest on the GT40, lowest on the LMP.

Chassis tuning on the LMP is going to be quite a bit more difficult. Race teams employ a lot of specialists (tire, damper, data acquisition etc) to make these cars work their best. Controlling ride height is critical.

Corvette Transaxle with manual T56 trans. You can't buy this from GM, but we put this together a couple years ago. Some modification required.

You can see how long the assy is. Fits in a prototype because they use an extended bellhousing/oil tank unit. This is a mock up of project Protovette we have been working on.

Ted- are you channeling your inner Morgan with that wooden frame? Looks like it could be a little bit wobbly in the twisties!

Just kidding- it looks like a fun project..and the gearbox looks just like the kind of arrangement that would work for the new LMP car.

What transmission is that mac?

It was/is built by a an outfit in Auckland, NZ. Only read articles about it, never seen one in the flesh so to speak. From picture it looks like it must either use a chain or three gear setup to get rotation correct- my guess would be the chain from a Ford Exploder 4wd, R&P from either OZ Falcon/Holden IRS diff [ possibility the R&P is from Exploder front diff ] & TreMec type trans....

But to get back to the LMP-1...IF... Fran has really planned it around the vette drivetrain, then an option might be any normal manual trans mated up directly to a Winters/Halibrand etc Quick Change, since the thing is going to have 'zip' in the way of ground clearance you might as well get the engine etc as low as possible to..

could also mount engine/transaxle on angle so that the engine is below the trans. I;'ve seen this mounting on a couple Group C cars - Aston Martin, also a Chevy Spice

Considering the RCR LMP is designed specifically for the LS Engine/Corvette transaxle setup and comes with a "Steel engine and rear suspension cradle/billet chassis plate"... Fran must have it all worked out.

I agree that build complexity will likely be lowest on the LMP (likely 1/2 the hours of an SLC). That combined with the uniquness of the car, track only application & corvette drivetrain, computer, etc... sealed the LMP deal for me

A dry sumped 525HP LS3 in the LMP will be 3.8lbs/hp in this car and with a stroker kit, cam and heads... an easy 660HP would yield 3.0lbs/hp which make it identical to a radical SR8 :stunned:. That combined with original LMP body shape, wing, splitter etc... it should have enough power & downforce to run with just about anything out there:thumbsup:

Cant wait! Looking forward to a very merry x-mas :cool2:

Just wondering what Kevin and others are planning for their transaxle setup: automatic or standard, paddle shifters or conventional?
Thanks,
David

Plan is to run a dry sumped LS3 & Z06 6 speed manual transaxle that is beefed up to reliably handle 700HP & 600ftlbs torque.

Why a 6 speed manual? For me it was/is a process of elimination and a lesser of the evils approach. A car like this is far better suited to a paddle shifted manual but the cost, availability, reliability and maintenance on that configuration is not practical for a hobby racer like myself. I havent really considered an automatic mostly because I dont like them and I cant see the rpm matching/downshift control being there either. That leaves the 6 speed manual.

The LMP with Z06 drivetrain will routinely see 5th gear and maybe even the odd 6th gear shift... so a guy will have to be good with the stick & heal/toe shifting thats for sure.
