Fuel pump inertia cut off switch

I'm at the point of doing some wiring and would like to run this by you guys. I will be using two separate switches on the dash to turn the fuel pumps on (grounding the infinity mastercell with the switches). In order to incorporate an inertia cut off I thought I could use it as the chassis ground to the switches. In effect cutting ground to the switch/ master cell in an accident.

put it under your seat or somewhere you can reach easily

When you get out move the switch - it makes an excellent anti theft device

Fuel pumps have a nasty habit of failing at the wrong times. Helps with diag/ repair. I’m running high and low pressure pumps. Ken that was the one I was looking at. Thanks for your confirmation.

I imagine the switches are designed for 12V. Given the very small current run to the Mastercell input, I wonder if it wouldn't be better to put the inertia switch on the output, not the input. If there is any resistance in the switch, it might make the input side inconsistent.

Ford makes a nice little impact switch. You can find them in a salvage yard- look in the left side of the trunk. Cheap too.

Will, because I'm using two pumps through the master cell that would require two inertia switches with relays on the hot side at the pumps. The inertia switches are rated for only 10 amps. Since they are such a simply design I believe to use them to interrupt the ground side will be ok. Just to be sure I'll measure the resistance.

Neil you sparked a memory of my only personal experience with a ford inertia switch. In 1987 I worked in the Mercedes/ SAAB service dept of a Ford, Lincoln,Mercury, Mercedes and SAAB dealership. Needing a commuter car I purchased a brand new 1987 and one half Ford Escort GT. It was a new design and fun to commute with. Shortly after purchase (less than 1000 miles) the family and I took a road trip to Long Island NY from Pennsylvania to visit family. While driving on the Cross Bronx Expressway ( a very bad road) through the South Bronx ( a VERY VERY BAD area at the time) we hit a pothole and the car shut off in New York City traffic. Being an ASE master tech didn't help with a thousand thoughts of what could have failed BUT I remembered one of the Ford guys talking about a brand new Ford towed in because the inertia switch popped for no reason. Within a minute I popped the hatch (your left side of the trunk reference) and the switch clicked when I reset it. My wife's panic attack was immediately defused when she realized her genius (lucky) husband fixed the car and we were on our way. Moral of the story.........I'll get the switch from Pegasus :)

Great story, Rich. My Jaguar XJ-S had the impact switch conveniently located just to the left of my left knee. Easy to reset but I never had to.

Ian I was planning to put it within drivers reach. How easy would it be to trip as an anti theft device?

Hi
Switch I had but never fitted had a slider that you could push either way.
In a bump the weight inside knocked the slider forward to cut power. Basically sliding it forward did the same thing. No idea what the switch was from or where it is as moved house in the interim.

So sorry not much help and no doubt the switches have changed over the 12 years since my build.
