For the pilots among us. This is quite long but a good story.

The ...SPITFIRE...Powered by the Famous, Rolls Royce Merlin Engine, a V12, 27 Litre , giving approx 1400 bhp

A little known version of the Merlin Engine was the Meteor Engine, basically the same engine , but without the supercharger, it gave about 600 bhp

These engines were fitted to the Cromwell Tanks. They were capable of 40 mph, but had to have goveners fitted because the suspension couldnt handle the speeds.

Cromwell tanks first saw service with the 7th Armoured Division, in the D-day landings. They used the same main gun ammunition as the Sherman tank, but had a lower sillouette, and were faster and more manouverable

My father fought in the Cromwell tanks from Normandy, till the end of the war, he was the front machine gunner

Hi Mick,

Last year whilst watching a static display tank engine fire up, we were informed by the owner that a lot of the Rolls Royce tank engines were built by Rover.

He told us this before he fired it up, or I still wouldn't know :)
