Can anyone advise /suggest a filter for the stack pipes that do not cut HP and look good? I started with these,
they look crap but work well.

I tried these they look great but cut HP and I started losing bits of the foam in the filter "sandwich" into the engine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif
And yes I did search.

Pete,

I made my own filters from 3 layers of household A/C filter media. The filters are held in place by a combination of a tight fit, vacuum, and finally stainless screen panels. I manufactured the gaskets from 1/4" vacuum hose, slit lengthwise, wrapped around the edge of the screen, and glued into the induction holes with black weatherstrip adhesive. If I ever get around to it, a turkey pan, sealed to the rear clip with weatherstrip, should completely seal the intake from any dust or foreign debris.
I have not had the car on a dyno since installing the filters, but I never noticed a difference.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail or PM me.

Pete,

A close up shot.

I forgot to mention that household A/C filter media is

typically white. I dyed mine with black ink.

I hope you came through that storm OK!

Hi Pete,
I have always felt that if I was to run a setup like yours on the street that I would fabricate a custom base plate to match the large oval Ford or Cobra type air filter top and use two elements stacked to ensure enough flow. The base plate would be mounted on studs mounted on the manifold and the eight holes for the ram tubes flared or flanged in a manner that would allow a rubber boot similar to a cv joint boot to be clamped to the base plate and fit snugly on each ram tube. If you still want the individual look have you checked out the K&N filters sold for Hillborn Injection systems. I have yet to see one of these fail or break up in service and you can clean and reuse them .
Cheers Jack.

Pete, I got my car through the emissions tests with red filter socks like your 1st pic - looked ugly, but did solve the problem of any spit-back adding HC's to the sniffer.

I then tried the Inglese filters (I think that looks like your 2nd pic) - not happy - 3 of the rubber rings failed in the 1st 20mins of driving, & not having the tuning right yet, a bit of spit-back dissolved most of the the foam filter material !

I read a post quite a while ago & for the life of me, I can't remember from whom, but the gist was that he had run his car in the US without filters for 50,000 mls & found no noticeable wear in the bores or anywhere after a full tear-down.

So I am just not going to worry about filters on the trumpets at all - but I will make up some grills/filters like Bill Bayard's for the side intakes - should help to keep the rocks & pebbles out ! A turkey pan might come later - cooler air input & less rocks & pebbles from underneath !

Kind Regards,

Peter D.

Thanks guys, you have given some new ideas, Bill I like your solution and thanks the storm was nowhere near us, so no problems.

Pete,
The ones that came on mine from Webercarbsdirect.com have not been discussed yet. They are a elastic banded slip on, but are a mesh plastic material. The guy at Webercarbs said they flow the best, and while they look a little "sloppy" he preferrs over all others. I looked on their web site, but could not find them listed. If interested, may want to contact them directly: www.webercarbsdirect.com

Pete -

Check out some of the side draft carb filters at piper cross. I think they sell blank bottom plates for them as well. Not sure if long enough to cover 4 stack with the spacing on the ford but they looked interesting.

Piper Cross

Bill filter/screen are really a neat idea. The one question I'll ask is has anyone without an air filter had a back fire with the stacks and a plastic rear window? Some of the older ford pics have a metal deflector above them but I don't see that too often on new GT40s.

Sandy, I have had more spit-backs up the trumpets than I could count while the endless tuning went on - but no lasting damage to the perspex window. As long as they are a bit random like mine were (& not a constant flame-thrower effect), things seems pretty safe. Once we got the tuning right, there were no further problems.

A mate of mine made up a nice perspex shield to sit over the top of his Weber trumpets - reasons were threefold :

- protect the window
- helps with a more uniform air flow input
- may stop various odds & sods from falling into the trumpets

(It is never a good idea to ask him about how a cotter pin found its way into a cylinder) !!!

Kind Regards,

Peter D.
