Motorcycle Lift

Has anyone used a 1000 pound motorcycle lift for the construction phase? My guess is that with the engine installed, wheels and body off, we are at 1900 pounds or so. I thought that Fran had told me they use a similar lift at the shop? Not sure..

I bought one from Harbor Freight a 1,200# model.. It worked for the body / chassis alone, but even adding the weight of a dummy block and the transaxle, the ram would no longer lift it.. I ended up selling it off and am using a fixed platform now.

See the TOOLS section of my website below and you can see what I did to mine to make it safer ans easier to use.

We use them day in and day out and have done for the last 8 years and have never had one fail...

Once an engine and transaxle...real not plastic are installed we use a floor jack as a helper and once at the right work height we use 4 jack stands for support to enable us to climb all over the car during build with zero concerns of the whole thing tipping over.

The lift is invaluable for getting the built car back onto the ground...a much forgotten exercise once the car is almost completed...

Hi Fran, what height would you recommend for a build board, I have the top of the board at 28.5" (725mm ) at present, and it seems a little too high, great to get under, but sometimes I feel like I need a step ladder to get inside the body shell.
Its 38" (965mm) from the floor to the top of the door sills, the annoying part is after I climb in and get comfortable the next hand tool I need, is you guessed it on the floor.

Graeme..

thats one of the reasons we use these little lift tables as I am a short arse and my guys are taller ....I cant reach inside the car at certain work heights and they dont like to come down to my Hobbit height..
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful...

I will be starting my build soon and have been thinking about buying two of these: High Position Motorcycle Lift I like how they can go from 3" to 30" high.

Along planning to get two sets of jack stands, to cover a range of 11"-26" for the off-the-floor dimension for the frame.

Anyone see a problem with this plan?

I am sorry John, but that lift is just too scarry for me. A bit too skinny. Looks like it would fall over with not much trouble. I personnaly built a wood frame to sit the car on. It was about knee high and that made it easy to get into and out of. Good chair height for suspension work. It only has to be under the cabin, so any crawling around is easy and at a good distance for arm extension. Jack stands will do the same thing for that matter. I built it out of scap wood left over from a deck construction. 6x6 legs and 2x4 runners with plywood for bracing. The 2x4s were notched into the legs and the plywood and decking bolts held it all together. Was able to raise the shell with an engine hoist to do odd position welding(TIG). Had some heavy duty wheels under one end so that moving it around in the shop was not much trouble. Had some car mover skates for the other end when needed.

So I found this:Hydraulic Scissor Lift - 6000 Lb. Capacity. It lowers to 4" and will raise to 40". The nice thing is that it is $628.58. Went to Harbor Freight Coupon Codes: 20% Off Site-Wide | PromoCodesForYou.com and got 20%off. Shipping was $89.00

Yes, but 39" isn't enough to comfortably sit on a roller stool underneath if you want to work on the floor pan from below, so you need to crawl around or use a creeper, and then the scissor and cross bars are often in the way. That's why I want to use two MC lifts on the sides and set the frame on 30" jack stands if I'm going to lie on a creeper to work on the car's underside.

Just like Fran does it...

Says they are regularly $1900-2000 ish. It is new but they are on backorder. I have until July so no problem. I don't see the problem with the 39" height. I believe there isn't a need to go completely under the car with a 5-6' clearance? I will have jack stands on the corners once it is positioned.
