Steering rack GTD40

I need to change the steering rack of a GTD built in 1987

Can someone help me with the type of rack

I assume it eighter a Escort MK II
or maybe a Granada MK4

Not sure but it is the standard GTD built.

Many thanks

Fred,
It is Cortina 3,4,5...
I need a new one aswell :stunned:
They ask for a reconditioned one about 100 pounds.

Andy

Escort racks are narrower and compromise bump steer geometry. Cortina 3, 4 and 5 are all the same and wider. Brand new available from Kelly Bray Steering for approx. £90.

Hi All,

Many thanks for your input.
I also ctcd Mister GT40 alias Frank Catt and confirmed the Cortina part.

PAB,
I ordered last night via Ebay at KB Steering as you mentionned.Tx.

Andy,
Is this on top of standard placement as there was already a Cortina part ?

I am looking for a replacement rack for my car also. I believe that my car was built in 1994, it is GTD 20390. Probably the Cortina unit.
Is there a source for this rack in the U.S. ??
Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, A few years ago, just after 9/11, I took a GTD steering rack complete in a box to Fran Hall in Detroit, and was held by five customs guys pointed guns at me at the collection point, you can guess what a steering rack looked like on their x ray machines ! Frank

My steerack is now placed and works fine.
Thanks to you all and Frank !

Paul,
You may order via Ebay and vendor KB Steering in UK.
99 Ukp plus shipping.

I was thinking that the last Cortinas that came over here were MK3s. Was going to try salvage yards, but realized my car is right hand drive.. not likely to find that in the US.
Looks like KB is best option. Will see if they will ship it over here.
Thanks to all for help.

Paul

Kelly Bray does ship worldwide! I am favorably impressed with their prompt service. The rack is now on its way across the ocean (I hope).

Frank, I am hoping that a bunch of armed customs agents are not going to follow that package to my house. They might find a "weapon of mass destruction" which that part will bolt onto lurking in my garage. ;-))

Thanks and regards,
Paul

If it's helpful as an alternative if the Cortina rack is tough to find....I know the later CAV (based on the GTD I believe) used a BMW 3-series rack. There were some not-so-elegant tie rod extenders added onto the outboard ends to meet the front track requirements but seemed like a very precise and well built/designed rack and mount system. Might be a more readily available rack - just a thought.

Hi Cliff- Looks like we are neighbors. I have to deal with some of the NMFS/NOAA people that have their office down there.

Believe it or not I have already received the rack from Kelly Bray and it is bolted into the car!!! Excellent service if you need steering gear for a British car.

Paul

The outcome of my experience at Detroit airport customs concluded with a demand from the senior guy holding a gun at me as to the contents of my box. I stated that it was a steering rack for a Ford Gt40, at which point one guy came forward, reviewed the image on the screen and agreed that was what it was. Obviously an ex Ford employee!

Paul,

Interesting. Small world - I went to high school in B'ham. The NOAA folks are just a few blocks down the road from me.

Great to hear you're squared away with the rack - if you're visiting NOAA with the '40 one days then let me know and come by.
