Update on my ZF Repairs

Remember this...

I Got Screwed

Well, I just talked with Lloyd at RBT Transmissions. The good news is I don't need a new transaxle. The bad news is the cost to repair mine is $3500 (+/- $150 for shims). I also opted to have the case polished, since the additional $650 is nothing compared to the rebuild costs.

He said the synchros were all shot, the unit had been run w/o oil and the ring and pinion were slightly scored but usable. He said new R&P gears would cost $2500.

I'm relieved that I don't have to fork out an additional $9K, but $3500 is still a lot of money.

That is a stinger. Sorry to hear that you got hit for that, but at least when your done you can be sure your box is in top form. You should go to the
"ZF Failure" thread and post one about the failure mode of an idiot to put fluid in the box. Oh well, you getting it done and will be nice to see it polished too.

Yep no oil will kill any gearbox fairly quickly, like I said in the ZF failure thread, you can guarantee lack of oil and crap drivers IMHO are responsible for breaking this box. The ZF synchros are known to wear so they were probably due for replacement. Change the oil frequently and make sure the level is right, learn how to shift it fast and smooth, then forget about it. You are more likely to damage the engine from an over rev than have any ZF trouble. One thing to remember is the gearshift should have zero play in any of the rod joints. A bad gearshift could be responsible for a driver breaking a box too I reckon.
