Vehicle Shipping in North America

Greetings all,

I seek input from those who have experience with shipping a vehicle… as I’ve never done this before, comments from the experienced would be a real plus on the following, at a minimum:

• Reputable companies
• Companies to steer clear of
• Details to pay careful attention to before signing the contract

What say you, friends? Who’s been down this road?

Rich's Classic Transport

Just used these guys, from my Lola post....

-----

Rich's Classic Transport to bring the Lola from Detroit to Raleigh NC. These guys are fantastic, and do nice work. I've worked with two transport companies in the past, both good, but these fellows are my favorite now. Rich and Doug Lacy are the owners, and drivers, and use enclosed trailers to move their cars around. Super nice, good to work with, and prompt as well as on time. www.rct1966.com or 402-366-1848.

Thumbs up all the way for Rich Lacey. He may not be the cheapest out there but you definitely get what you pay for. He delivered my car when I bought and he kept me informed all the way. Called the day before to let me know an approximate range of arrival time to be sure I was going to be there. Called again when about an hour out.
He also transported an engine for me. Couldn't ask for a nicer guy or better service.

I appreciate the input, guys... and hope Rich knows he has a fan club in the GT replica family!

My thoughts when I asked for input were/are two-fold: first, I do need to make arrangements for a cross country move in the near term and, second, there are without a doubt many others who participate (or just quietly watch like I did for quite some time) here on the forum who will face solving this same detail as they prepare to bring home the car of their dreams.

When I posted, I had not missed Rons favorable comments concerning Richs Classic Transport and the delivery of his Lola, nor had I overlooked how impressed Al was with Intercity and the delivery of his long awaited GT. That feedback was the reason I've contacted both for the shipping next month of my early Christmas present.

Nonetheless, the difference in quote from Detroit to Seattle is significant: Rich needs $2600 and change for the delivery, while Intercity is closer to $1900. While $700 is a small percentage of the finished cost of this project, that same difference will pay for the better part of of the required parts from Kennedy.

Hence my search for more input from our collective GT family.

I (and future GT owners) would be grateful for any and all comments.

Thanks in advance,

T.

$700 for peace of mind is really a small price to pay. Considering that a marginal transportation job could include exposure to elements, temporary stays in unsupervised holding yards, several loadings and unloadings of the car to accommodate the pick up and drop offs of other cars....it's worth paying extra for a good shipper who will really take care of your car.

An update:

For those who are blessed with roads suitable enough to allow an 80-foot semi truck right to your front door, you have a world of options. In that case, I am sure that Intercity Lines OR Rich’s Classic Transport, both of whom have excellent reputations, would serve you well. No doubt there are other transportation companies which would do a superior job of transporting a vehicle. For those who do NOT have wide roads, the choices are the same however the level of service is vastly different.

Both companies received the same clear description of roads to our home. Basically, my situation is one where a full size semi cannot be parked on the street in front of the house, let alone in the driveway. The closest a semi could park and unload is a couple hundred yards from the garage – that’s ¼ mile uphill to the garage. Again, both IL and RCT received the same description.

Intercity, one of the two companies I chose to work with, would commit only to delivering the car to the city I live in, not a door to door delivery as I had been told initially. To finish the move, I would need to supply a truck and trailer –both of which I do not have but can make arrangements for- to haul the car the rest of the way. This certainly explained the difference in quote.

RCT, on the other hand, not only wasn’t put off in the slightest with the situation, Rich’s response was “…not a problem.” Right off, Rich described two possible solutions which he’s used in the past. Right then, I was sold. As for cost, we discussed that as well. Rich sharpened his pencil a bit and came back with a lower number than my original guesstimate which he provided to me while he was on the road to make a delivery.

One more thing. All of us are able to pick up the tone in someone’s voice – happy, sad, busy, quiet, excited, etc. When I spoke with the IL rep, it was business. With RCT, it was clear to me he was genuinely excited about and in love with cars. For some, that could play a part in their decision.

More soon,

T.

The attitude of Rich and his brother had a lot to do with my recommendation. Also I found their prices to be pretty competitive. I certainly could not have rented a trailer and done it myself for less. I am glad to hear that they have treated you as well as they treated me. I always have felt that it makes me look bad if I make a recommendation and it doesn't work out.
