That's pretty cool. I'm getting my pilots license, yesterday as I was taking off in a Cessna 172, the National Guard was taking off on the parallel runway in F16s. I was thinking "what a great way to spend a Saturday morning that would be"! Flying the 172 isn't bad, but a F16...................

An Apache gunship flew over us in the week, lower than most aircradft that pass us. made all the stuff in the garage rattle..

How far along are you Al?

I have to do a couple of cross country flights, one with the instructor, one solo, and then the FAA flight. I've got a little over 40 hours, the first solo flight is something you never forget. It was a great feeling. Something I always wanted to do.

Al, can you use GPS to navigate on your cross country, or do you have to do it the old fashioned way?.

You are right about the first solo being something you never forget. With mine the C.F.I. was down to do circuits with me as my normal instructor called in sick. (Supposedly) after a couple of touch and go's the C.F.I. said "stop here" At the end of the runway and he got out!! "do one circuit and bring it back to the hangar" and he walked off!!
After the initial shock and panic I took off and did the best circuit and greased the landing.... The next half dozen landings were shiite.
This was about forty five years ago in a Cherokee 140.

Funny, it's 5:30 AM now and my instructor just sent a text saying he was up all night with the trots, no flying today. I probably would have soloed earlier if I was in my 20s, but I wanted to know a bit more and be really confident. When I soloed I got off the ground about 50' and said "well you're pretty fucking committed now". The rest was by rote. I greased the 1st landing and the others you could walk away from. No GPS on the 1969 Cessna 172 I fly, but you can use it.

I remember my solo too - vividly. It was a C150. I was in High School at the time (1976) and weighed probably 120. My instructor was huge and that C150 with both of us barely climbed. Once he got out and I was on my own, you'd swear that thing was a F15.

The way the numbers are increasing around the M40 corridor, i am surprised Dave has not got a nesting par in his back garden. The outlaws used to keep their horses a stones throw from the M40 and Daves. Used to out in the field and hear the whoosh as one would fly not more than 10ft from your head, some with win spans over a couple of metres.

Anthony,
Yes indeed we have such a pair However they are quite noisy when not flying around
and are quite efficient at taking away small animals including a mole I shot and killed. Majestic to watch flying however, and especially when we have a westerly wind in summer when they can soar along the tree line without any apparent effort.

I'm 190 and my instructor is 235. Getting his chunky butt out of the plane greatly improved the climbing ability.

I have friends that worry about the smaller domestic animals - eagles will have them over for a snack. If you know what I mean....
