A very good friend of mine was restoring a derelict property in the middle of nowhere and was reporting to he police on a daily basis that there were thieves entering the property at night and stealing roof tiles etc. This went on for quite some time and the police never even bothered to call back and make a report. It reached fever pitch when a neighbour phoned him to report another intruder on his property, he phoned the police to tell them that he lived 20 minutes away and the police station was less than ten minutes so it would be in their interests to be there before him because he was going to shoot them. Guess who got there first.

That reminds me of a similar "cavalry-can't-get-there-'til-it's-too-late" story which is supposedly true:

'Angry deputies confront the property owner saying, "You told 9-1-1 you had shot these two guys!!!"...'guy replies, "Yep, 'sure did...and 9-1-1 told ME you people couldn't get here for at least another hour".
