Mark's GT-R Build

hi you have a steel roof get up there with some white paint, I company I used to work for had a workshop that was an oven, they painted the roof white and temp dropped 5 deg c worth a try

After looking at BAF's and the required head room to work properly, I needed to look at other options. I contemplated a grid of smaller Al fans, but that limits work space and lift options. A budget idea came across me with a new Hunter fan available at hardware stores....kind of a knock off of BAF design. 8' span at $700 isn't going to put a big dent in your AC budget.

I purchased fans from HD, for my shop which is 40 x 60, the 2 fans are easily 9-10' off the floor and 6' across the blades, reversible, 3 spds, and good warranty. Cost approx $190 ea.

Mark, I look forward to seeing your build. nice shop. I am very interested in the GT-R. I have some home renovation I need to complete before I place my order. I think I am 2 - 3 years out. I hope to stop in to visit Fran's shop in the next year. I am out of Boston so its not a local drive for me. but excited to see a few builds from people on the message board.

I had the opportunity to spend a few days at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Wow.....That is an experience! I looked over options for engines, interior items, tires, paint and wraps. I got quite a few ideas. Has anyone had experience with Mast Motorsports, out of Texas? I spoke with a guy that had a Factory Five GTM on display which he races. He has a Mast motor and feels it is bullet proof. I really like the look of Hilborn injection stacks, especially with the GT-R having a rather large back window. It appears that the GT-R will have enough room in the interior for a wide variety of seat options. Does anyone have any comments on that or any suggestions?

Hi Mark,

The factory 01 race car used a couple of Mast engines, each of which blew up in various spectacular ways. Maybe they've gotten better, or maybe you'd be easier on them, or perhaps there was another problem. But when we switched suppliers to Thomson (now part of Lingenfelter) we suddenly got more power and the reliability we needed to win the 2011 National Championship. I saw the same FFR car you saw at SEMA too, and it isn't a real race car as far as I know- it's more of a track day car, and probably sees less stress on the engine because of it.

Re the seats, the GTR is pretty spacious, so I'm guessing that width won't be a problem, but height may still be an issue. There is a spreadsheet of seat sizes that one of the SLC builders put together on the SLC wiki- it may be useful as a place to start.

I decided to have Katech build the motor. They did my Z06 and it is ridiculous. I wanted performance, but also a great look to the engine. I decided to go with a Performance Design Carbon XR intake on an LS3. Katech's version of an LS3 has about 540hp, then it will be up from there with the Performance Design intake. CF Valve covers will round out the look. I am getting excited.

I got some bad news from Katech. The intake from Performance Design is not available for LS3 heads. I don't really want to go with the LS7, so I decided to change the intake system to Kinsler Cross Ram Injectors. Katech tells me that I need to get air boxes or some sort of air filtration to keep the rings from being destroyed. Does anyone have any ideas on an air box design or source? It will be a while before I need them, but want to have some ideas to work with.

I am very close to just putting "sand socks" or prefilters over my intakes. Would keep most everything out, and easy to remove for shows etc.

I have some good news. The guys at Katech figured out a way to get the Performance Design intake on their LS3, basically using aftermarket LS7 heads. That gets the intake looking good, but getting it to fit was another issue. Fran, going WAY OUT OF HIS WAY, did a mock up of the intake in the GT-R, and realized that it does not really fit. Between Fran and Katech, they figured out that with a custom throttle body adapter, it can fit. These guys are amazing! They really care!

I can run standard diameter tubing off the throttle bodies, so cone shaped K&N filters will fit. I think K&N has a Carbon Fiber housing for their filters. If not, I will need to look for some good looking air filters. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.

These K&N filters look good. I want to see if I can get some connection to the air intakes designed into the "B" pillars. These could work. I don't mind some hassle when opening the rear clam. When Iget the car I will look at this.

Does anyone know the tire size that will work? The rears have a huge wheel well to fill. I assume 345/30R19 will work. I don't know about the front, so as not to hit the body work when turning.
