Del's Build: SLC IR/8

To do list for the weekend and week(s) coming up:
Install emblems, OMP orange inlay, add new 3 LED license plate bolts, replace igniter for the passenger side Morimoto HIDs, program garage door opener for SLC, swap out automatic door module for the Viper one and make a template for the areas on either side of license plate to measure and draw in 3D to get printed. Plus whatever I haven't crossed off original to do list.

Anyone reading this, one thing I'd also recommend when building, is to add some sort of area where you can store keys, phone, etc. Also cup holder would be nice. I think I have the phone mount figured out, I'll epoxy a magnet on the back side of the console some place out of the way so I can put my phone. My slim carbon fiber case has a magnet in it already so will be perfect. I may also add wireless charging pad on back side of console right magnet so if I get a phone that has it, it'll be ready to go.

I think soon I'm going to swap the Brembo pads back in the front, they should have better initial bite which I've discovered would probably be beneficial with the manual brakes.

My list was way to ambitious for the couple hours I have after my daughter goes to bed. I only had a chance Friday night to piddle around and only thing I got done was installing the rear SLC and IR/8 emblems. I used the vinyl cutter to cut a template to align them. Also made some decals to move around on the car until I found a spot I was happy with.

SLC is spot on, IR/8 I'm not totally convinced on location and size. One thing I realized was the 3M emblem tape I have is way too thick and with separate lettering it's obvious to me. I ordered some 3M 468MP, thanks to Trevor the recommendation! This stuff will allow me to mount them flush to the body and I think I can use my vinyl cutter to it it out exactly to fit emblems.

Was able to make a quick drive around town to put a few more miles on the car, ended up getting a pretty nice pic. I wanted one with the doors shut, but left my door fob at home. Always paranoid I'll accidentally hit the button in my pocket.

For kicks, here's the test decal for fender emblems and IR/8. I think when I pull them back off to use the 468MP, I may put the IR/8 below the taillights. I think it stands out a little too much on the ducktail.

When Photobucket works, I'll renew my account and get rid of the watermarks.

The SLC on the side is a tough place to put it, the diverse lines make it hard to choose. I'd say follow the body panel separation line, but to be sure get a look from at least 30 feet away at many angles before you settle. Another thing that makes it a tough place to put this is the varying panel gap in that locale, sort of calls attention to the 'challenge' of consistent panel alignment. I like the "8" emblem high on the tail myself, the car is so low no one will see it under the light ;)

That's a good point on distance before I commit to it, I'll definitely pull the car outside and test the same areas again to see how it looks. Totally agree with you. You're right, below lights would definitely make it harder to see, but that actually may be a good thing. While I love the idea of that emblem to make it "mine", I really don't want to explain it 100 times to people that don't know me and won't get my reasoning, lol.

Don't worry, you'll probably never get to explaining the emblem. You WILL be explaining what the car is 1000s of times. ;)

Ended up busy and then sick on the 4th's long weekend so other than a ride nothing was done until about midnight last night. The 335's needed a little extra clearance on the fenders so trimmed about 3/16", adjusted the QA1's (I had them all set at 7, thanks for the suggestion Cam) and closed her up to drive to work today. The more I see the silver F14's on the car, the more I'm digging the wheel style and color against Grigio Telesto. I may end up keeping them and getting them taken down to bare metal and doing brushed with a clear powdercoat possibly over the winter, would get done alot sooner than saving up for new wheels.

This is what I got to use for my paperwork and miscellaneous tools/fuses. I need to add pliers and few other things just to have. I should have just gotten black for the cable organizer, everything doesn't need to match. It fits perfectly between driver's seat and tub, not too tight or too loose.

Never fails, trying my best to break in engine/clutch and get this forcast for next 10 days. Hopefully will have some dry spots and time to get car out for some miles.

Had an undercover cop car stop in middle of the 2 lane highway so he could video me passing by him. Random and dumb, considering there was a car coming up behind him.

LOL- Ol' Racer will be wishing he had his doggie walk harness on and clipped in a few seconds from now!

Haha, only if I had the clutch broken in by now he would have. On a positive side, he can't attempt to jump out the window, lol.

I forgot to share that while Allan was building the car, I was digging around for alternative headlights to use in lieu of the Hellas while keeping with similar dimensions due to space requirements with the inner fenders. I found JW Speaker makes some very nice LED replacements and while I REALLY wanted to use them, the $216/light made me shy away. Nonetheless, it's an option for anyone looking to go with a legit LED sealed headlights.

JW are 90mm lights, 85mm mounting tabs & 90.3mm depth. Same dimensions for the Hella projectors, other than Hella has a 165mm depth

Tried using my phone + suction cup gopro mount, last minute before a taking off. Definitely not as steady of a video, need to figure out a more steady way. At least the audio volume isn't exaggerated, actually the opposite now, lol. Very boring video FYI, would not recommend watching the whole thing, lol.

Got to spend a couple hours in the shop late last night. Orange sharpie on the OMP logo, not a perfect match to the decals but at least it's not yellow. Will revisit the inlay idea later. I really need to get a 6th bolt for it, I keep forgetting I'm missing it.

Didn't really care for the polished intake tube so pulled it, scuffed it up and shot it with VHT wrinkle spray paint. Very impressed with how this stuff feels after it cures, seems to be very durable. I wish the sheen matched the intake a little better, but maybe after a sitting through several heat cycles in the engine bay it'll fade a bit.

Also trimmed the rear fenders a little bit more to try and eliminate the little rubbing. One of my Morimoto ballast took a dump and would only work 25% of the time, so pulled HIDs out to get a replacement ballast (have to break connectors on ballast to get replacement). Swapped my high beam LED bulbs into the low beams for the meantime. Pretty disappointed in Morimoto, always had good experience with them in the past so it's a bummer I even have to use warranty....especially for what they cost. Also got some Molykote 321R and sprayed my heim joints, plan to swap grease out on bushings with Cerulean next time car is in the air. Did all that last night so I could drive to work today, only to wake up and realize I need to run errands after work in next city over and not willing to deal with bridge construction traffic in the car just yet.

Well, yesterday made 2yrs since I recieved my kit. I had grand plans of it being completed within 2yrs and while that has been accomplished, it wasn't the way I ever expected. Can't thank Allan enough.

While browsing to see if they had any alternatives for the android headunit, I don't think I shared the headunit I went with. While it works perfectly fine (thanks again Scott for wiper stalk delete!), I do wish I had a volume knob instead of using buttons to make life a little easier. The current unit is probably as deep as you'd want to go for a stock dash, but will keep an eye open for another with a volume knob.

FYI I'm running WebCarGuru launcher on mine, perfect for the SLC with everything easily seen and accessed.

Current android screen:

I've been pondering infotainment systems recently ... thank you!

Welcome! This is my 3rd android headunit and less than half price of the other 2. I can't tell any performance difference using it compared to the others, but 95% of the time it's on the launcher you see playing music.

My only regret is a volume knob, but that's just personal preference. With CarWebGuru launcher you can customize themes, I bet I could add bigger on screen volume buttons that would be easier to use. I'll have to give that a shot now.
