Re: German GT40 interpretation

Beautiful!

Questions:

1. Isn't it a lot narrower than a '40?

2. Which engine will you use?

3. How the f*** did that guy fit in there?

Great project Axel..

Re: German GT40 interpretation

Fantastic sounding engine and a timeless design. Good fortune in your build project.

Re: German GT40 interpretation

Oh yeah...
It is indeed narrower than a GT40, I attached a pic where you can see what I have done.
I cut off 3 inches from the frame (sills) at both sides, which makes the car 6" less wide at the sills, and I made a cut in the front fender (red circle) to get it running into the doors which I made myself. With the 105% scaled up compared to the original Dino I am pretty satisfied with the result.

I got hold of a Ford V6 to VW/Porsche adapter, which means a Porsche 901/915/930 gearbox with a Ford Essex V6 or Cosworth V6 could be the choice.
But no final decision at the moment, would love to put an Alfa V6 in but there are no adapters available...

Don't know how this guy fits in there...hahaha

This is absolutely what I would put in there. Plenty around, cheap (!) glorious sound and all Italian! Nein nein nein das Ford! especially Essex...

3.0 or 3.2 litre Alfa Romeo on Weber or Dellorto...

Axel,

What a great project, I always though the 206 Dino is the best looking of all the Ferraris.

Re: German GT40 interpretation

Sure you should use an Italian V6 ! An Alfa could be a nice choice, but it could be tricky to adapt.I've red somewhere that it could be feasible to use a 164 Alfa engine with its bellhousing + an adaptor plate (which you'll have to engineer...) to mate it to a UN1 gearbox or any other of same design.

Re: German GT40 interpretation

Yepp, the challenge will be to get the alfa engine longitudinal in there. As far as I know nobody has done it yet and there are no adapters existing, which means I have to figure something out...don't want to have a transversal engine in it, too far away from the original layout..

Re: German GT40 interpretation

Hi Axel, first let me say you are doing an amazing project. I did like a lot of the renderings you showed early in the build and it looked like it was giong to be something special. The way you have now gone is no less special but I'm hoping that body wasn't real expensive as you seem to have very little left of it. I hope you don't move from this forum as I and many others want to see the final result I think its going to be awsome. There is one of these cars in NZ that has a hand built Alloy body and is an exact replica with the Dino motor and transmission, I thought it was the real thing until I was talking to the owner. It was built by a guy in the SouthIsland from scratch and is an amazing job, even the trim is the same as the car in your video. Keep up the good work. Cheers Leon.

Re: German GT40 interpretation

To clear up any confusion here, the 206 Spyder is a different animal to the 206 Dino production GT. The main difference being that the Spyder was a mid engined placement and was only produced in very limited numbers for racing, whilst the GT was the later production version with a rear mounted transverse engine.

I take it you are going for the rare mid engine (in-line) version.

The DOHC Alfa no way would fit in the 206 Dino....

But this, the GTV 2.5 SOHC surely could be squeezed in the Spyder? It looks as if it has an 80 degree V angle which would help.

It's an old engine but there must be some around somewhere...

Re: German GT40 interpretation

Keith,
this is the Alfa 6C 2.5 from the older GTV or Alfa 75, great engine!
They are still around here for reasonable prices and would be a great choice!

Here you can see the original Dino 206P engine layout.
V6, 2000ccm, about 220hp which is more than 100hp per 1000ccm, and this was 1964!
It was a pretty competitive racecar with its 550kg (1100lbs) and 220 horses.

Re: German GT40 interpretation

Very funny to see how this gearbox externally looks like a UN1 Renault !

You are right, it does look like a UN1, I checked other pics from the engine and the gearboxes look different. May be someone swapped the original broken transmission to a cheaper and available Renault...
I also heard that one swedish guy put a Volvo B19 in instead of a very expansive Dino race-engine. It has been changed back to a Dino engine later after some investor has bought that car.
There are just 18 made of this car, and they all look different somehow, the last ones have lower frontfenders and higher doors, a tribute to the time where all was handmade.
The designer of this car was Piero Drogo from Carozzeria Sportscars in Modena, although the very first proposal was released by Pininfarina.

Re: German GT40 interpretation

Its not often I've said this but Pinn's design was not his best work IMO. The greenhouse is too tall and the proportions are all wrong.....again IMO. Drogo got it spot on and I believe I'm correct in stating that he also designed the 330 P4? I also love the inboard brakes.

Will you also design inboards with your design Axel?
