Ferrari recall

Pete, what is it with ferrari's catching fire? I know of no other automobile manufacturer that has quite the incendiary record of ferrari - nothing else even comes close.

I know that in the old f-cars (308 onwards) it's a matter of having fuel tanks parked right next to exhaust manifolds, and using fuel lines with about a 5-year usable life considering the new fuel mixes we're seeing in most developed countries. A lot of "fuel rated" hoses don't like the grain alcohol blends we're seeing become more prevalent around the world.

But, come on, 308's started burning up in the 80's for god's sake. Ferrari has had 20+ years to figure out a way to stop their cars igniting themselves. And now they're "gluing" the parts together? How about just using a darn bolt or screw? It's unbelievable. I'd never ever consider buying a newish f-car.

And all that "by private invitation only" vip client list crap that ferrari pulls. What a load of shite. Ooooohhh, let's all stand around like a bunch of door knobs drinking champagne and toasting eachother at the latest "private" and "exclusive and elite-only new product launch" gathering. Gimme a break.

OK, I'm done complaining now.....

F40's have had a nasty habit of developing combustion spontaneously too. Remember JP on this board? He of the aborted MDA project?

He subsequently acquired an F40 which combusted during a track day. Always same place for mid engine installation LH side rear, and I think a fuel tank vent passes close to this point. Not sure can't remember.

It was quite heavily posted on Wrecked Exotics at the time which always seems to feature ahighly disproportionate number of 'F' cars at any one time, or is it just the 'owner profile'? :)

Hey its not just Ferrari, its Italians and anything electrical, anybody who has worked on Most Italian cars will agree. The Machines I work with are Made in Italy and the electrical systems are an absolute nightmare. They can design the most beautiful cars and even build them, but they should not be allowd to do the Electrics. Leonmac

Couldn't agree with you more. I have been fortunate to own some nice cars, and always get the invite to the "champagne and private invitation" bollocks. I would rather eat my own face off than go to self congratulative shit like that. I love cars, and love driving them, but I DONT like the image that they are often stuck with because of those people....

I still own 2 old Ferrari's and 1 old Lamborghini, and could not agree more about the electrical for the exception of Lambos after 1991, seems they did a good job but ALL the old cars are nightmares. One of the main problems with 70s and 80s model Ferrari's is there is a huge spade type plug behind the main fuse panel, its meant to be a quick disconnect but its nothing more than an area of resistance and the older the car the more the resistance has built over the years, causing heat causing more resistance till stuff quits working or runs real slow and you can always smell that electrical hot smell that makes you nervous. Many people replace window motors in 308 thinking they are crap but its all in that connector. I cut them out and hard wire them together and use a #2 gauge welding cable to the battery. Its amazing how everything starts working again. (wipers, windows, blowers, dash light get bright)

Pete you need any late model 355 motor parts? I am parting out that 98 355 motor I bought last year and got shafted on. Still has many good parts. Cheap

I'd tend to agree. Pictures of burned F cars are legion. And yes, I do remember JP and his burned up F40. Wow.

So five of 1200 have burned up? That is a really poor ratio for modern car production. I'm sure the average F owner simply puts it down to the car being such a high performance and finely engineered work of art that some sacrifices have to be made for ultimate performance and being able to drive "Flat Out, because that is how they drive, Flat Out."

I did see a program on Discovery that featured the Ferrari engine plant. Looked gorgeous and state of the art. Maybe that isn't the case over in the chassis / electrical assembly area.

Thanks for the offer Jack, I'm O.K. for parts, but next service I will ask them to by pass the spade plug behind the fuse box. Thanks for the info.
