G50-03 cable shifter

First, let me say thanks for all the good info I've already found here. I've been building a Lamborghini Diablo replica for some time (hope you don't resent outsiders here!). Today I stumbled across a posting on this forum, and learned more from that one thread about hooking up my G50 transaxle than I have in several months of reading and asking questions on the Kitcarcentral forum. I do have one remaining question that I'm hoping someone can help me with.

In that thread I saw several brackets for mounting the shifter cables to the nose of the transaxle, and one in particular that looked like it would work for me. I've attached the photo of it below (I hope: first try at attaching a photo), with thanks to the original poster. Could someone please tell me where I could find such an animal? Many thanks!

As I posted for you on your other message about the 930 shifters;
Could anyone tell me where to locate the bracket and shaft attachment hardware shown in several of the photos in this thread (particularly those pictured by Big-Foot)? I'm trying to hookup to a long G50-03. Thanks!

Brandwood is the maker of the original brackets and levers. I had to make my own lever and Shift bracket to make the combination work with my shortened G50/03.

Thanks for the help. I've ordered the bracket, and I think it's going to work out for me.

You may be far past this point, but I thought I'd mention: it appears that if you'd heat and remove some of the existing bend from the bracket just next to the point where the cable attaches (forgotten what the cables are called, but the one that turns the shaft, not the one that slides the shaft in/out of the casing), it would take some of the kink out of that cable.

I also wanted to ask you another question: I'm in the process of shortening my long G50-03 much as you did. Can you tell me how to remove the plug/keeper at the tail that retains the shifter shaft bushing and seal? Much rather know than guess and ruin it!

Hi,

I'm glad you were able to get a hold of them to make your order..

If you notice - I made no changes at all to the actual brackets and components supplied by CableShift / RCR. I did this on purpose in the hopes that CableShift might supply the correct brackets / lever that would work properly with my transmission.

On the bracket - The side pull cable handles the neutral gate.
If you look at the picture below, you'll see another part of that bracket (right under the cable) that goes to the other side of the transmission. I can't really bent the mount for the side-pull cable without cutting off this crossover part of the bracket and then extending it. So what I plan on doing is to cut a pair of opposing wedges to mount the cable to this bracket. The wedges (one on each side of the bracket) will aim the cable further to the rear.

Speaking to the shortening -
You do not need to remove the shaft itself from the transmission.

The rear seal is just pressed in and it's likely to be destroyed when you remove it - mine was. There is a linear bearing on the inside of that tailshaft housing that you'll need to remove. I did so my finding a deep-well socket that sit snugly (but not too tight) inside that hole frrom the "inside" of the housing. The socket will come up against the outer race of the bearing. I then tapped it out from the inside.

Now here comes the fun part. You cut down the tailshaft housing as I did and then you'll need a machine shop to open that resulting hole up enough to accept the linear bearing and then the seal. This cost a little bit of money as I did not have the appropriate sized bits to bore it first for the linear bearing and then again for the seal.

How does this work?

Mine seems to work well on the car as it sat in the shop - but it's not yet been on the road.
When I say "well" - I mean that I was able to hit all 5 forward gears and reverse - however - I've shifted some really old trucks that shifted better.
Time will tell how well it works when it's on the road and the gearbox is lubricated and loosened up some.

What gearbox did you use for the Cable shift system. By the looks of the tail it appears to have had substancial modifications. That may be the reason for your problems.

FYI the cable shift that we use for the G50/03 to G50/05 takes no more then 20 minutes to install and is very well thought out. There definantly looks to be something different about the system pictured.
