KVA Project

Hi Paul

I look forward to seeing the build log for your KVA.

I got the moulded fibre glass openings for the fuel filler caps, the door handle mouldings and the aluminium handles from Mick Sollis at Southern GT, all excellent quality and reasonable priced, the door moulding was easy to fit, the fuel filler ones took a bit more time to get correct as the curve on the MK3 front clip is slightly different to the MK1 (which the moulding is from) and the fact that I have made my front clip hinged with hidden catches - so had to make sure that when the clip opens it does not catch the fuel filler lid.

Mine hade a Rover V8 with Citroen gearbox like yours when purchased, as I decided to go with a SBF engine it made sense to have a new rear end from Southern GT fitted as it makes the fitting of the engine easier (And it sits lower in the chassis) - the only modification required to the Southern GT rear end is to accept the MK3 rear body as its about 10 inch longer that the MK1 - so needs a different rear hinge arrangement, particularly if you go for exhausts that exit under the body (As I have done)

Tony

Tony,
Also I have no openings in the front clip for fuel access, (where did you get them from?) also I have Morris Marina door handles.

great to see another MK3 coming along, we are a rare breed, the car looks fantastic, what colour scheme are you going for..... looks like your not far off an IVA??

I've attached a pic of mine... where in the Uk are you based??

keep up the good work

Fantastic to see these KVA's getting built/finished at long last. There must be dozens still out there in barns etc. not to mention GTD's.

Anyhow Tony - it's all looking good. Will you do IVA before bodywork?

Hi James, The pictures of your car look fantastic, I like the Blue with the wire wheels.

Top choice of colour is Royal Maroon (As used on 69 Mustang's) followed by Monza Blue (As used on early 70's Capri, Escort) both with contrasting colour stripe on the sill.

The plan is to get the IVA done early part of next year, but some business trips may delay this.

I live in South Norfolk

Hi Keith, Totally agree that its good to see the MK3 KVA's getting finished at last, with the advent of the internet and the small industries specifically for car restoration/building kit cars/replicas has made it easier than it would have been in the 80's.

The plan is to do the minimum of body work just to get it through the IVA and then do the bodywork fully afterwards.

Tony

One of the latest purchases was to have some Stainless exhausts and silencers made. Made with IVA in mind so each bank has two silencers and nearly 5 feet of pipe work, but all sectioned and joined with V bands, so the top silencers could be bypassed later on if desired.

As mentioned previously the rear body work has been hinged so that the valance does not go downwards towards the ground as the clip is opened so that the exhaust could exit under the valance and have gone with two twin exits.

Both sides have built in ports, one side will house the wide band sensor the other will be for gas analyser probe when on rolling road.

Failed the 1st test on one point - handbrake efficiency, retested and passed = Words cannot express the happiness and joy.

A big thank you to Andy Green for his invaluable help and advise throughout the build.

Now I can start the strip down for painting – Opalescent Maroon.

Hi Tony,
Well done mate and it’s been a pleasure working with you on this project, where you did all the hard work, I was just pointing you in the right direction!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>
Compared to what you’ve achieved over the last 3 years, the next 9 months before Classic LeMans should be easy<o:p></o:p>

It's really nice to see an abandoned project eventually get finished (we all know they are never finished). The IVA is a real tester for anyone but it goes to show that it IS achievable.

Well done Tony.

Brian.

Hi Paul

Hello from Norfolk, England - not quite Africa

I had the rims made to the same spoke pattern as originals, but they are 16x7.5 (225/55/ZR16) on rear and 16x6 (195/55/ZR16) on front.

Yes will be at LM classic next year, will be coming in convey with another MK3 and 2 MK1's. - See you there.

Comgratulations
I remember the day well when mine passed the SVA

Now the fun starts with tinkering and getting it to go as you want.

See you at LMC next year

It definably pays to know your limits and when its best to leave a job the professionals, after 3 weeks of waiting for the body work to be done and the car painted, it came back just after lunch today - to say I am pleased with the results is a total understatement, I have a permanent grin on my face like a Cheshire cat.

Chris at Absolute Bodywork in Norfolk is a master of his craft and worked miracles with a 1984 body that was poor fitting, crazed and warped from bad storage over many years.

Below are pictures of how it looked 3 ½ years ago when purchased and the finished result in Opalescent maroon.

Ah!I was thinking for my car the Audi A8 2006 Brown metalic paint as from which you still can get them in 2pack acrylic or water based paint.

beautifull color on your car !
even i'm still in Africa for the job i made some small progress as my wire wheels arrived a few weeks ago.
wheels made by Phill Halewell with my predefined ofset and backspace(wil try to upload picture when the internet is a bit faster here in Centrafrica!)

now i can start working and thinking front up rights kingpin angle, caster and ackerman. and choose to which steering rack i will connect it all.

as my front supension (originally ford capri1300) is completely out of order and rusted away.
i need to recreate a new front i think. or rechassis the whole.

BTw: my invitation for the LMC 2018 stands. the house welcoms you..... and the car.... to spy on it!

once again congratulations on the beauty
paul

Making good progress with the re-fit, Before being sprayedhad removed the front and rear wiring looms, they have now been re-fitted andall the lights are in and working.

I have made the side and rear windows from a sheet of LexanPolycarbonate and fitted Helicopter Vents to the side windows, got front screenseal and fitting kit from Rejel.

Made the mesh grills for front and side intakes from ahoneycomb mesh as it gives a 70% open area, so as to not restrict cooling airin and painted it black which goes well with the Maroon and chrome colourscheme.

Still a few external jobs to go, like fitting the vitalonisebring chrome wing mirrors.

Started work on the interior with making door pockets anddoor cards and fitted a Nardi steering wheel, after Christmas will get theseats trimmed.

Plan to get the car on the road for 1st March to shake down in readiness for planned trip to Classic Le Mann.
