I voice an opinion regarding the oil pipelines path, and the opposition (correct my error if needed) hears me say "let's get rid of all oil".

...how else might one interpret the wording/tone of your post, exactly? (Reread it from the reader's side and see what you think.)

Why doesn't Canada run it out their west side (no, I didn't say, why don't we get rid of all the potential jobs in the US?)

I would imagine they want access to our refineries, our markets, and the export routes from The Gulf.

Just saw a 'horror' video of a wind turbine running away in a gale. I have no idea when or where but it looks kind of European. Anyway, the local village had a wind farm imposed on them despite an almost 100% objection. So there were probably 20 or so of these giant windmills and one ran away in gale force winds when the brake failed (I guess it's an electro magnetic brake just as I have on my mobility scooter)

As it ran away it made an increasingly urgent whining sound and alerted the locals who called the operators. The residents were told to stand 'at least 400 yards away for safety!'

Eventually, this machine was turning at a rate ('000s rpms) when inevitably a fibreglass blade sheared, and the whole thing tore itself apart scattering sizeable pieces of shrapnel over a wide area. The company's guess was quite good although shrapnel littered the fields and the village. The velocity of the break up was significant enough to ensure serious injury or death to anyone unfortunate enough to be in range, and damage to property. It was a pretty scary sight and reminded me a little of a scene from 'War of the Worlds' All that was left was a 50' high stump of the column. These things were pretty tall - probably over 100 feet but I'm only guessing.

I have never heard of this before, but it surely can't be an isolated case. Anyone know of anymore incidents like this? What if the collateral damage was the blade of a neighbouring turbine?

That must have been a real "horror", kind of like the "horror" videos of Chernobly, Three Mile Island and Fukushima!

You do realise that many people have died in GT40's don't you Jim, yet you still have one. Shame on you, burning all those fossil Fuels. get back in the Prius and do us a favour, pop to the smug shop and grab a pound of smug would you? Now there's a good fellow.

Exactly. I believe Keith said something along the lines of, "How can someone who has put over 30,000 miles on a gas guzzling GT40 lecture on this."

I have a liberal couple living next door. One day they came up to my wife and gushingly told her, "We've cut down on our carbon foot print by getting rid of our second car!"

Turns out he lost his job, because of Obamanomics (why isn't that term bantered about?) and they fight all the time about her having to bring in all the money!

Ah the appearances some of us feel the need to manufacture for ourselves.

"Ignore the little liberal behind the curtain!"

Put your food or drink down so you don't choke....and read this!

A resolution put forward by Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., and a dozen other House Democrats claims that global warming could drive women to prostitution, The Hill reported Monday.

According to Democrats, climate change will affect women worse than men and could force poor women into the sex trade.
...
" insecure women with limited socioeconomic resources may be vulnerable to situations such as sex work, transactional sex, and early marriage that put them at risk for HIV, STIs, unplanned pregnancy, and poor reproductive health," the resolution says.

So the Sun gets hotter and so girls are sorced to turn to prostitution to fund the purchase of a new set of Raybans?
FFS. Sack these bloody morons people. Stop voting like your grandaddy did, and get them out of office. This is like being driven to school by the local town drunk!

Well, that was quite a negative response to a serious question. I mean if I had a 100' tower with 3 massive turbine blades spinning out of control near my back yard, yes I would consider that a 'horror' situation, and given the growth of these things (growth as in carbuncle, is a very appropriate word in my opinion) then it is a matter of serious concern for people local to these land based 'wind farms'. Would anyone disagree with that basic premise?

I was putting forward a question to the knowledgeable people on here as I had not heard of, or even considered this type of event. To receive such a sarcastic reply really does force home the reality that some people are so entrenched in an ideology that any negative comment, is seen as an attack on their personal beliefs, and as such they feel they have to ridicule everybody else's. This is not a new problem on this site.

In a debate, there are 'pros' & 'cons' to every subject matter. Without the debate and the respective pros and cons, we would be living a a totalitarian state. I envy citizens that instinctively know they are right without discussion - personally, I like to consider all alternatives.

Does the poster who replied comparing wind turbines with nuclear power think that such a world without debate expressing either side of an issue, would be a better place for us?

Please discuss...

Blades that are out of balance can fail. It's not a regular occurrence. Most injuries related to wind farms are with maintenance workers working in high wind conditions.

The rest of this post is not directed at Hardy's comments/questions, which are fair. The anti-wind stuff on this board is both hilarious and perplexing. On shore wind is reasonably cheap (installed per kW cost similar to coal and natural gas), has far lower secondary (pollution) costs, and is becoming more reliable and an increasing part of the grid (up to 20-30% in some countries). It will never be able to handle base load like coal/nuke/LNG, but it is a fantastic supplementary source for peak loading conditions.

The wind hate is thus perplexing in that it makes no sense, and hilarious in that it seems almost entirely politically motivated.

Its like you are trying to prove that you have no idea what you are talking about, and once again you have been successful!

Rayban sunglasses...........................really?

What they were talking about is the effect that climate change will have on poor areas of the world where having enough FOOD is a close run thing.

Global warming, climate change (no matter what the cause) will change rain patterns. Some areas will receive more rain, for the most part that is good.

Some areas will receive less rain, that could be bad. They were speaking to many many effects that this type of minor change can have on areas where FOOD is scarce.

Yes Mark in areas were food is scarce, a slight decrease in rain can have many negative effects, like little water, necessary migration, forced migration, crime, prostitution and STARVATION.

Mark apparently your imagination leads you to think that these poor mothers would turn to prostitution because they need new sunglasses?

Thats crap and you know it! These mothers like mothers all over the world will do almost anything to keep their childeren from STARVING.

Of course the Right wing clamped on to the prostitution part of the report and you joined right in...........................

Tell us Mark how far would you go if you and your family were starving?

Rayban my ass!

I knew you'd go for that one Jim! Nothing like being predictable now is there?! Just look at how few words I had to post to get you to waste soooo many more! ;)

Me thinks the gentleman protests too much!

But equally, doesn't the pro wind stance make no sense either because the technology & impact is location dependent and cannot be specifically denied or even promoted because it depends on who or where you are?

Given the financial incentives I believe are on offer, the rush to build in the UK is dependent on Govt handouts it seems. I know/understand little of the economics of wind power vs other forms of energy but I believe that it is a clunker type technology which is visually offensive and offshore, downright dangerous. Wave power (still in relative infancy here) I think will eventually overtake the wind farm methodology and makes a lot more sense both aesthetically and practically (wave forms are 24/7, plus the energy can be stored).

You know, if wind tech was driven by the people and not Corporations & Govt (who are only trusted by 3% of the population here according to a very recent survey) it might stand a better chance, but it seems a majority in the UK don't like/want them. That's a lot of people you can find to be hilarious in case you get fed up of laughing hilariously at anything I say. Perhaps in the USA you are blessed with a surfeit of locations which lessens the impact of wind farms, but here, we can't seem to escape them.

So, another negative response to a perfectly reasonable question and a supportive & entrenched view with a UScentric only flavour.

Perhaps you two should get out more.

PS I don't get the right wing/left wing stuff. Is this an American only thing?

I recently took a group of commercial clients around the Drax generation facility, to show them exactly where their energy comes from and to meet the traders on the energy trading floor.

If you guys fully understood the infrastructure needed to supply our current needs and the colossal investment needed to meet future demands, you would very quickly learn to dismiss Wind as a realistic alternative.

Even as a 'supplementary' source, it simply doesn't add up. It only works well from a political/visual perspective. It can be 'seen' and therefore easily 'sold' to the ill-informed voter, who's money is needed to support it.
