Hi Guys

I'm Jules from the UK. I recently purchased a Tornado GT40 that had been left under a tarpauline for nearly 10yrs and was in need of a little TLC (we'll OK nothing a complete rebuild won't sort).
So far I have completely stripped the car and had to replace the best part of 50% of the chassis that was corroded and almost ready to shotblast the rest and get it powder coated ready for the long haul of reassembling.
The person that originally built it done some scary bodges - the steering colomn was held in with about 3mm of weld and lots of fresh air and the brake pedal had been cut and welded (well superglue would have held better than his welding)
Next up is to mount the new steering column properly and need to find a new pedal box.

I'll post some pics soon and maybe get myself a build thread going

It sounds like you have a great project, you will find very sharp guys here with lots of car building experiance!

If you have not already done this, you should check out the build logs, I bet most of what you are doing has been covered. But feel free to ask questions most folks here offer great advice.

Where abouts in the UK are you?

You might find there's a GT40 Enthusiast's Club meeting somewhere near you where you can go along and meet like minded individuals, many of whom have already built theirs, with a vast wealth of knowledge. Throughout the summer months there are numerous club meetings and events where many will also brings their cars.

May I add my welcome Jules and may I also ask where in the UK are you? Owner of a karting track! sounds good and a possible venue for a meet up one day. As others have said let's have some photos; and ask away, there is plenty of knowledge here, note also that Tornado is well represented on here so you should get what you need to finish the project.

Thanks for your welcomes, i'm going to start a build log any day. The Chassis is now at the powdercoaters due back tomorrow and then the build begins - fortunately i have a good team of staff that can get whilst i'm tinkering and having a good welder on my books has payed off

Hi Julian,
congratulations on your purchase, I'm sure you'll enjoy building it.
As it's an older chassis (like mine) you'll need to add in seat mounting straps to the chassis to get it through the IVA test. Have a look at my build to clarify this

Jules, Chippenham! I used to live there and still visit regularly. I have a house on Cepen park south. So your Kart circuit must be in Hullavington yes? That's a great central location for both South West and more eastern locations (Bucks etc). And there is the Air base circuit there too for track days. Sounds like a recipe for a day out very soon. There is a 40 owner in Laycock too, (unless he's sold it by now). When you have your project back home, perhaps I can call round when I'm in the area.

Hello all, I'm Scotty, I work for Jules at the Karting center.
I have done the rebuild of the chassis for him, Here are some pics of his strip down so far. He has stripped the car & cut out the bad metal himself & then I fabricated all the new chassis components & welded them in (& also filled up some remaining rivet holes).The steering column is an out the box kit from tornado. At a good guess I would say I put about 80 hours into the fab work.
It has definately taken me out of my normal work, I'm normally servicing rental karts or building low capacity 2-stroke engines for bike racing.

It is nice to get a challenge at work now & then.
