Many a true word spoken in jest Paul.....:stunned:

Question is, why the heck are civilian aircraft flying over East Ukraine anyway?

I can think of some airline stock you can pick up dirt cheap right now. Two major losses in a year tend to ruin a business.

This is really going to stir the pot and I am afraid of what is going to float to the top.

Believe it or not, the Ukraine Govt issued a warning to civilian airliners to stay above 30,000 ft when overflying this region because 2 of their planes had recently been "downed". The Malaysian plane was at 33,000 when it "fell". Amazingly, this is a regular route for many major airlines as it offers a straight line to the Far East, but such is their penny pinching, that no-one in authority thought that it just might be safer to go around and burn up some more fuel instead.

As of 1500 today, not one airline is overflying East Ukraine any more. Horse gone - door shut.

Ask yourself. If you were an executive of an airline, would you honestly permit your plane with 300 souls on board to overfly a war zone where 2 military planes had recently been shot down? Honestly?

So the story here is the separatist missile battery mistook the Boing 777 of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 for a Ukrainian military AN-26 and shot it down. How does a widebody airliner that cruises at 560mph at 33,000ft get confused with a turboprop that cruises at 273mph at 24,600ft? You can go on flightradar24.com and see who the hell is overhead. You can even look at the plane and see the difference from the ground. Even the most rudimentary anti-aircraft launch system has an IFF capability. Then you have the alleged communications intercept of Cossack commander Nikolay Kozitsin who tells an unidentified separatist that the fact the Malaysia Airlines plane was flying over the combat zone likely meant it was carrying spies.

It doesn't look that "accidental" to me.

Interesting to see how many plane are still flying over the Ukraine.

It's easy if the person looking at it is a trigger-happy fucking fool, that's how. And that's how it happened. I think the decision to launch the missile was made by someone at the site who was just intelligent enough to know how to push the button, but nowhere near intelligent enough to know what the hell he was shooting at.

Six of the dead were an entire Dutch family of four- parents and their four children on holiday.

Bastards is right. They should take them up to 33,000 feet and throw THEM out. See how they like it.

A senior flight officer interviewed on the beeb this morning said that for quite a while now its been a flight path to be avoided. How these weapons end up in the hands of these knuckle scraping barbarians beggars belief. Thoughts for the family's and friends of the victims.

Are you serious ?
From talking to a very well informed friend, this system is old hat.
Designed in the late 1970's, built in the 1980's, it's now almost obselete
within frontline armies. However, still supplied to the likes of Syria and Pakistan. China, as China does, has copied it.
However, and this is a big However, the separatists are by and large, disgruntelled miners, call centre workers, shop workers, lawyers yak , yak , yak. or so we are lead to believe. ( Of course, that is a whole different can of worms )
Most of the systems , expecially the radar locating and tracking system has been updated periodically.
The total number of vehicles to launch a missle is 4.
The primary launcher, 2 associated radar vehicles and a Command vehicle.
I suggest this is way beyond the capabilities of your average " miner/desk worker "
it only leaves one conclusion.... and that doesn't involve anything remotely born in Ukraine.

This might prove enlightening :

Since contact was lost with Malaysian airliner MH17, there has been claim and counter-claim on social media in Ukraine. Here's a timeline of what's been posted by whom.

There's been a lot of chatter on Ukraine's social networks since Thursday about who is responsible for the destruction of MH17 - the Malaysian plane carrying 298 people.

But the social media story really begins almost three weeks ago, on 29 June. Back then, key Twitter account used by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine claimed that they had captured a Buk surface-to-air missile system from the Ukrainian army. The tweet has since been deleted, according to BBC Monitoring. But this matters because Ukrainian officials later claimed that a Buk may have been used to shoot down the Malaysian Airlines plane.

Fast forward to the day the plane went down. Beginning at 13:50 GMT on Thursday, an account believed to be linked to a pro-Russian separatist leader in Ukraine, Igor Girkin (Strelkov), posted on the Russian social network VKontakte. He claimed that militants had shot down at least one Ukrainian military plane near the Donetsk Region town of Torez, possibly two. The post has now been deleted.

Shortly afterwards, pro-Kremlin TV channels started reporting that a Ukrainian plane has been shot down by rebels, calling it "a new victory of the Donetsk militia" in their broadcast.

Malaysian airlines has said it lost contact with its airliner at 14:15 GMT, 50km from the Russia-Ukraine border.

At approx 15:00-15:30, Twitter accounts in Ukraine began discussing a shot down plane. They first assumed this was a Ukrainian air force plane, but and soon news spread that a Malaysian plane had "crashed" in Ukraine near the Russian border; soon later it was reported as having been "shot down".

By 15:38 GMT, the blame game had begun in Ukraine. Russian news agency Interfax quoted rebel representative Sergey Kavtaradze as blaming "the Ukrainian side" for the Malaysian plane crash. "We simply have no air defence systems of this kind," he said. And at 15:59, Ukrainian news website Censor.net quoted a Ukrainian army source as saying the Malaysian airliner was downed by the Russians, not the Ukrainians.

By 16:00, #MH17 and #PrayForMH17 had become top Twitter trends in Malaysia and soon after, worldwide top trends.

By 18:00, pro-Russian accounts on social media in Ukraine began to distance themselves from earlier claims that they had downed at least one Ukrainian plane. "The information was taken from a local online chatroom where locals talk to each other," said a tweet from Strelkov Info, a key account used by pro-Russians in eastern Ukraine.

But at 18:04, the issue of the Buk surface-to-air missile came back. Ukrainian military journalist Dmytro Tymchuk used his website to report that pro-Russian rebelswith a Buk were spotted in the Donetsk Region earlier in the day.

In Ukraine, Боинг-777 (Boeing 777) and #MH17 began to trend last night. In Russia, СУ-25 (Sukhoi Su-25 aircraft which is used by the Ukrainian armed forces) trended on Twitter in relation to a previous incident where an aircraft operating over Eastern Ukraine was claimed to have been downed by a rocket fired by a Russian fighter on Wednesday evening.

Today on social media, the information war continues. Leaders in Russia and the Ukraine continue to blame one another, as do the separatists. On Wikipedia, both sides are trying to portray their side of the story. According to the Global Voices blog, an IP address based in Kyiv edited the MH17 record to say that the plane was shot down "by terrorists of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic with Buk system missiles, which the terrorists received from the Russian Federation." But soon enough, that record was edited to portray a different side of the story. The same article reports that a Moscow IP address from a computer at VGTRK, the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, replaced the earlier edit with the sentence, "The plane was shot down by Ukrainian soldiers." The discovery was made by a Twitter bot that tracks anonymous Wikipedia edits made from IP addresses used by the Russian government.

Meanwhile in Malaysia, there is doubt that the truth will be revealed by either Ukrainian or Russian authorities. Malaysian Sports and Youth Minister Khairy Jamaluddin's call for the black boxes to be investigated independently was retweeted more than 11,000 times. I feel very, very strongly that the #MH17 black box must NOT be examined by either Russia or Ukraine," he wrote. "It must be returned to Malaysia."

i wonder if part of the problem, is the Russians being used to tragedies of this magnitude, on a yearly basis.
The Kursk nuclear submarine sinking.
The massacre of Russian schoolchildren by Chechens, over 300 i believe.
The mass slaughter on the Moscow metro by Chechens.
Numerous wholescale mining accidents.
Let alone the historic " culling " of , someone's guess, 10 million of it's own citizens, because they were percieved to not " think the right thoughts ".
putin ( and i use a small p deliberately ) has on every occasion, failed miserably, to connect himself with the people, he seems unable to be empathetic.
I doubt the truth will ever come out about what has recently happened,
but there is always the chance of another revolution in Russia.
But this one will only be instigated by confiscating the monies of the Oligarchs that support Putin. most of whom live in western countries.
Why are we fearful to confiscate their money ?
It's a simple thing to do. Declare them supporters of a terrorist organisation,
let the lawyers argue for 10 years, and spend the money on a few facilities for our own veterans, who at least fought for just causes.

But i guess no one has any balls( again a small b ), that's at least what the Russians would respect... Why do we vote these impotent , sterile , pension fixated farts into office..
