Speed Demon just ran 411 mph! That is just under the world's record for a wheel-driven vehicle.

Speed Demon just qualified for a new record: 447.709 mph. They are taking it to the impound area where the crew has 4 hours to prepare the car for another run early tomorrow morning. If the average of the two runs exceeds the existing record the George Poteet and Speed Demon will then be the new record holders.

BTW, the exit speed through the 5 mile trap was 455 mph!

The salt is dry and hard but thin.

The Demon appears to have a set a new AA/BFS record at 437+. Yesterday afternoon they went 428 (exit speed 436). Impound overnight. Ran again early this morning and reached a 450 avg (exit speed 460.6). Well done!

They may sacrifice this record in order to attempt a faster speed...we'll know later this morning.

Do you know the year that photo was taken? The record in that class, D Gas Roadster is currently:

engine size D name Hot Rod Hoodlums driver D. Jones date 8 /12 219.831 mph

I'll try to find him in the SCTA files.

I'll try to find him in the SCTA files.

That was 2005. I would be amazed if the car still had the same engine in it. It was a Cadillac Northstar engine.

This morning Speed Demon made another run on the long course at Bonneville. 470.733 mph average in mile 5. WOW!

While deciding whether or not to send out Christmas cards this year, I found something in my Dad’s papers that may be suitable for 2020. Just a little reminder that the world was also in turmoil in 1945 but the outlook was beginning to look brighter. This is a scan of a Christmas poem that someone wrote and mimeographed in Manila, Philippine Islands, just after it was captured in 1945.

Just as 1945 was the last Christmas of WW II, let’s hope 2020 is the last year of this virus. Be hopeful- be safe.

In July, 2018, we witnessed a GIGANTIC lightening storm in the Scottsdale, Az., area at about 1 A.M.!
U-N-B-E-L-E-I-V-A-B-L-E !
Lightening traveled from one end of "The Valley" to the other (North/South) AND as far as one could see from East to Wast as well.
Lasted for a good 20 minutes.
Beautiful!

My original YouTube build diary had no narration, only some text titles, so it wasn't very helpful in telling the story of the details of my build so I re- edited it completely. Now it has a narration soundtrack so it may be a bit more interesting but it does run pretty long (about 56 minutes!) so grab a beer or two to watch the whole thing.

I noticed that my quick-release steering wheel seemed a bit loose on its hub so I decided to replace it. On another car I had used a hex shaped quick-release hub but it had more play than I thought it should have. I drilled and tapped a hole in the aluminum hub for a screw with a knob on the end. I tightened the screw just enough to remove all the play. This was similar to a "gib" screw on a milling machine, etc. This worked but made it more difficult to slide the steering wheel off.
After looking at many quick-release steering wheel hubs, I decided on a splined hub from Mark Williams. The splined shaft slips over 3/4" dia tubing and either bolts in place or is welded. The other piece is internally splined with one tooth missing for indexing. This slides on and off easily but has virtually no play. If you are looking for a nice quick-release steering wheel hub I recommend you look at the ones from Mark Williams.

I've been working on my car, getting it ready for Bonneville in September. I decided to take off the front fiberglass bodywork so that I had easier access to a few things under there. Arrrggghhh... dirt and salt everywhere. The salt I can understand but the dirt? I've never been to Elmo. :confused: (slang for El Mirage, a dry lake in California notorious for its dust).

Cleaning everything up is a PITA but it needs to be done. It is a good thing I live here in the dry desert (8% humidity here yesterday) or the salt corrosion would be far worse. It's a good thing I don't drive this on the street. If I got stopped by the police I'd probably be taken away in handcuffs- the salt crystals look just like crack cocaine that I've seen on TV.

If any GT40 owners ever have the urge to try a high speed run on the salt flats in their GT40 etc, my advice is- don't.

While you're in there could you take a good picture of the toe loop on the throttle peddle? That looks like something I might want to copy.
