M20 Dreaming

Hi Rod, your reamer will be in the post on Monday, it moved from my workshop to my house a few months ago and now my wife will be posting it tomorrow. I built it from photos off the internet and got the major dimensions from books I have on McLaren cars, I then made my own drawings. That is why the front was never right as I couldn't find photos, then Richard from Autotune in the UK sent me a photo showing the front which is why I changed it and now is much more like the original car. If you ran a tape measure over it, it wouldn't be inch perfect but it will be pretty darn close. Ray Franklin from Vintage Engineering sent me a drawing quite some time back of the M20 Roll bar and it was only an inch wider at the base than what I had made and the M20 steering rack that I got from him fits in perfectly so I think I'm not too far off. Cheers Leon

I forgot about the reamer you can keep it. That was a lot of work scaling from pictures! Did you make patterns so you could sell plans?

Reamer is already on its way. To answer a question that I know is going to be asked at some point. I don't intend to sell any of this project as a kit or parts there of, but I'm keen to build more complete or semi complete (less Engine/Trans) cars if there is a call for it.
I hope that is not going to get me in trouble.
How are you recovering from your theft mate? is the project you bought the uprights for going ahead.
Cheers leon

I'm recovering I bought new welders and some other fab tools, the engine stuff is a different story all my sb2.2 stuff is gone and I'm not going to replace it with the same I'm going with afr heads and fuel injection intake. I dug out one of my injured aluminium blocks and put sleeves in it so I'm back on track just a little, slower I got 20k out of insurance so only 120k loss. In the future I may be interested in a roller?Rod

Looking really good Leon, very impressed.
I will be in Wellington in April Visiting my Son. He and his Fiancé are having a baby. So one of my Granddaughter's will be a Kiwi. You only live around the corner if I remember correctly. Would I be imposing if I paid a visit?
Regards, Udo.

Thats good to hear Rod, You just have to move on don't ya, and having something to focus on helps but man its still stinks.
More than welcome Udo, It may be just around the corner by Aussie standards but its about a 4 hr drive or a 40 minute flight, if you fly I can pick you up no probs.
Got some paint on the plug today, I'm basically lazy and sick of sanding so I'm going to try a coat of gloss 2 pack on the doors and see how the finish looks and how it polish's up, the guys at the Fibreglass Shop said it is a good way to go on the plug. As long as it is a 2 Pack and use plenty of polish it will work fine so I will do the doors and see how it works out. Cheers Leon

Leon, the more work you put into your finish now means that much less come mold time. I am waxing my molds again now ready to pull body number two and the surface is still almost perfect if I can say. I did give it 5 coats of wax which is still very much intact so I will only re coat 3 times before I use them again.
Cheers

Leon
The first picture is my Rear clip mold as last used, not clean and been stored for 2 years and the second one is the door mold polished ready for molding.
Cheers

Don't get me wrong Russell, I'm still going to make sure I have a nice finish on the plug so the mold is good. I have painted the doors and they have a great shine on them will fine sand and polish them up then take molds of them first, then I will do the sides and last the top surfaces. I'm away for 8 days on Sunday, taking my youngest to settle into University in Christchurch. Cheers Leon

Finally!!! some wheels I have the wheels cast and tyres on 1 front and 1 rear will have the other two mounted tomorrow and get the fronts on the tub. The body has progressed a bit more while I was away, my mate Kelvin put in a few hours of sanding, fabbed up the bottom of the rear panel and redid the windscreen edge after I decided it wasn't quite the right shape. He didn't thank me for that!!

Now THAT is a BIG moment right there. :)

I think those are 19" wide .... if I remember the few wheels I am jealous of correctly.

You are correct Rob, 19" wide with a 26/15/15 Tyre. the fronts are 11" with 23/10.5/15 Tyre's. I have made these wheels 2 peice, the main reason was the casting cost and it gives me the ability to easily make them in different widths. These ones have a steel inner because of the bell needed for my Brakes but spun alloy shells are also available. I better get back to the workshop. Cheers Leon

=leonmac;19" wide with a 26/15/15

4" of side wall stretch... Ouch. You may not be aware but, Hoosier makes a 17" wide 15" Dia Super Modified paved oval rear TIRE that may be of use to you. I think Canepa's uses them on their 917/30KL

Us PHAT TIRE fans got'sta stick together ;)
