Spell Checking

Dear Folks,

I've noticed some of you have been asking for a spellchecker. I don't have one on the forum software, but there is an easy way to get one:

Use the Google Toolbar, it has one.

http://www.google.com/downloads/

Go to the link above and get their toolbar. It is quite nice, just make sure you turn off the advanced features when installing so it doesn't send info back to home base. Then, enjoy the Popup blocker that works we,, the spell checker that will check any window you have open, and the nice Google search bar in your browser window so you can quit typing www.google.com before searching.

Give it a try, I think most will like it. Those that are paranoid or conspiracy theorists should probably not get it.

If you're using Firefox as your web browser, you can add a book mark to the Bookmark Toolbar that uses the following bit of code as the link:
<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>JavaScript:void(q=prompt('Spell Word:','')); if(q)void(location='http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q='+escape(q)) </pre><hr />
This will popup a little box that asks you for a word to check. It will use the current window for the results, so you probably should switch to another window before you begin the query.

It's possible to edit the script to use other online dictionaries.

Most people have microsoft Word. It spell checks all your e mail as you write it. What I do is type in an e mail what I want to post then I copy it after all the spell check is done then I paste it into my post. I don't do this all the time but it works great. I usually keep the open e mail minimized at the bottom until I'm ready to post again.

Try the Google Tool bar Hershal, trust me, you'll like it! No more cutting and pasting, works on any forum you are posting on, and does a good job. I don't use it all the time, most times I simply look like the non-spelling idiot I am, but I am using it more and more.

Hersh,

Your technique also assumes eveyone uses Outlook for email. But if you use Lotus Notes or Netscape's mail client, both of those can be used in a similar way; although, they don't do autocorrect like Word. But then again, I hate autocorrect because it is constantly correcting engineering type terms and propernames, as well as, insisting on captials when you are at the beginning of a line even if you are not using typical sentence structure (this one particularly annoys me.)

Having a utility that will spell check the current window is far more convienent though. I may try it just to avoid the cut-n-paste procedures. I may also be switching to Firefox in the very near future, so thanks for the tip Ben!

Regards,
Lynn

Lynn, I know what you mean. Going back to change it is a pain.
Ron, I'll give it a whirl.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks Ron

I know that some of my gaffs in the past have been embarrassing to say the least. Recent posts have highlighted the need for an easily accessible spell checker. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
