Worried about your Personal Freedoms?

....but wait till they hack your system and re-program your IT / PC camera to watch without your knowledge, maybe program your smart phone to record everything you say and do - like, send you a speeding ticket when the GPS in your phone indicates you are over the limit. If you let it happen, it will.

One either 'gets' the concept of spying or he doesn't. I don't believe you do...

I'm astonished. You are quite correct.

Jim's responses would have invoked a "Maggies Drawers" on the firing range..

Al, it's happening here now with GPS trackers and 'traffic' cameras - nearer than you think.

Problem is, it's generally not in the public domain and remains a stealthy attack on us as individuals.

B-I-N-G-O

And there are already applications that will do everything you covered above..

Not only applications - but "free services"... I predicted a number of years ago when Google first hit the ground and caught on like wildfire.. I don't for a single second believe that they are collecting only metadata on your associations, habits and likes.. Why is Google not allowed in some countries? :lipsrsealed:

These eyes in the sky are disconcerting, but I'm not going to be overly concerned about them..

I am sick of having this fence rail chaffing at my arse on this issue guys. I completely agree with why Keith/Pete/Larry etc who warn against these intrusions, or the errosion of personal liberty. Totally get it.

I still think that there have to be exceptions if we are to have any chance at catching jolly robber or Mr and Mrs Uptonogood. BUT, as I mentioned before, I only condone such things as random stops etc, IF THEY ARE FULLY OPEN TO PUBLIC REVIEW.

I guess, I'll just have to get some ointment for the chaffing!

LOL Pat, that's because the government is SOCIALIST and you are an angry old white dude! (I'm joking)

I voted for the President and generally support him. That said, this stuff -surveillance of us and our allies -- scares the shit out of me. It's an offshoot of what President Eisnenhower warned against when he left office in 1960, which was the growing rise of the military industrial complex and the inability of civilian government to deal with it.

During the Cold War, the CIA got so out of hand with assassinations and spying and that Congress convened a separate committee, the Church Committee to try and rein it in and stop it.

But I fear it has spun out of control again, and I fear that if a President like Obama, who was committed to personal freedoms and transparency in government, can't stop this stuff and even worse apparently has been convinced by the powers that be that it is necessary, then we are in BIG trouble.

Drones over the US?

Monitoring citizen phone and computer use?

THis is getting crazy and I see no real way to stop it.

and I see no real way to stop it.

Neither do I Jeff. Complain too strongly and it will simply go back underground and continue anyway. I guess the BIG difference is, that if it is secret, they can't possibly use evidence gained by it, against domestic citizens in any meaningful way, such as prosecutions. Merely using it to covertly spot stuff and then know where to focus their efforts to build a legitimate case?

As for monitoring to spot Terrist cells etc, well, we mere mortals don't know and will never k now what really goes on.

Yep. I'm torn by that too. This stuff isn't being done in the name of evil, it's generally good folks thinking it is necessary to fight terrorism. But the risk of abuse is SO high...and scary.

Old Infidels,

The more totalitarian USA becomes ,,,, the more endearing it is to Iron Sheik . Water boarding,, torturing prisoners ,,,spying on your own people,,,, hunting down “none believers” (Snowden),,,,,bombing at will and “letting god/Allah, sort the bad & good”.:shifty:

Ahhhhh,,,,,,I might just come back to USA,,,it is more “Middle Eastern” than I thought. Now this is MY TYPE of country 

I'm willing to bet that this technology was not developed to watch US Citizens.

It looks to me to be the perfect way to go back after an IED roadside bomb attack, see the person who planted the bomb and trace where they came from and where they went. I bet they use it for exactly that. They track known bad guys, see where the go, see where the people they meet go........................

Unfortunatly, this type of satellite can't hover over a certain area, the geocynchronous orbits are way too far out for this type of camara, so the nature of their orbits means that they cover most of the earth, including here in the US.

It's no secret that you and I don't see eye-to-eye on anything 99.9% of the time...so, when the two of us BOTH condemn something as being rotten to the core - it pretty obviously must be rotten to the core.

I think the spy in the sky is just another gadget to add to the vast array of other information the powers that be have at their disposal. So much of what we do in our daily lives is on record now. What have we got?

1. Our mobile phones can be used to track our movements.
2. All the calls made on them can be recorded and the numbers dialled are kept on record.
3. Our spending history via ebay and credit cards is monitored.
4. On entering most large towns or city`s in this country you are picked up on cctv at least 300 times before you leave.
5. Our computers browsing history is recorded by our providers.
6. All our medical history is on file.
7. DVLA know about every car you have owned.
8. Insurance companies hold information on file.
7. You can spy in gardens with google earth.
8. Births, deaths and marriage records.
9. Electoral role.
10. Passport records.

As they say " you can run but you cant hide"

And I read about this a while ago. Scary.

Dang, I agree with just about everything Jeff posted. And I am an angry old white dude but with a cool car and a hot wife ;) Next time I'm in Raleigh I'll have to offer to buy him a drink and post a picture.

Back to point, for a little more perspective, have a look at this link. It will give you an idea of what the unclassified capabilities are of the government. You can't privately even scratch your arse or "adjust your package" anymore.

To your point Jeff, I think we are in big trouble but not just because of the massive amount of intrusive data collected. As Mr. Snowden and PFC Manning have proven they don't seem to be able to effectively protect what they acquire and as the tragedy in Benghazi and surprises in leadership changes in Egypt, the situation in Syria and the Boston Bombing, they don't seem to be able to digest and interpret all they have anyway.

It reminds me of the final scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

Please don't take this the wrong way but I believe the Military Hawks, major Defence Contractors and oil companies were delighted with 9/11 and it's aftermath.

I have no way of confirming this - just a gut feeling.

Curious Jeff do you really believe he was truly committed to that or that he simply used that as a rallying point against what everyone was blaming Bush for? I have not seen any evidence from the day he took office that would suggest he wanted any change but would be happy to entertain anything someone can show.

I absolutely think he was. I just think he was naive, or maybe we all were. ONce you put something like the Patriot Act in place, there is a vested interest in keeping it AND once it "saves 1 life" then it's too easy to justify keeping it around.

It's just like if Rand Paul were ever elected President. I think he is as personally committed to transparency and civil liberties (well, except for women's reproductive rights) as the President. But he gets elected, Day One, the CIA trots in the "Briefing Book" full of all the "Big BAd Secrets that Keep us Safe" and he's another convert to the cause.

It concerns me because I don't know if either side can or has the will to fix this.

STOP PRESS. Do we have a (almost) cross party consensus?
