Remember the pics of 1109 a week ago at Phillip Island? Well look at it now. This happened during an Historic Demonstration!!!!!!! at the Grand Prix. Driven by Vern Schuppan an Australian Sports car legend. Very stupid. They should have let me drive it! It wouldn't be looking like that now if they had.

I suppose I'd better describe the damage. There's no link Malc I had scanned a photo out of motorsport news. Anyway the left side door was gone,1/2 the left sill gone, left front suspension broken ( wheel at a funny angle), front clip smashed away at the front and major crack from wheel arch to headlight a very sorry sight. The heat damage to the rear clip seems to pale into insignificance after seeing this. I saw the line of Historic cars going out on friday so this may have happened on Saturday or Sunday. I think there must be a very sheepish V Shuppan hiding somewhere.I doubt whether the stewards would have been happy they usually take a very dim view of this behaviour.I don't know if your serious or being funny Dalton but I do have a suitable Cams license to drive a car there, however Rob Sherard the owner of 1109 doesn't know me. It just p......s me off to see one of these cars pranged by an idiot and worse, not even in the heat of battle.

. Driven by Vern Schuppan an Australian Sports car legend.

Seems like a couple of events a year has a historic car getting stuffed by some "legend". Hasn't Mr. Moss damaged some at Goodwood (seriously, I don't know the answer and am asking)? Other legends?

I seem to remember Jonathon Palmer binning a Formula One car ( a McLaren I think) at the Goodwood Festival a couple of years ago - and Red Bull designer Adrian Newey crashed his GT40 at le Mans last year....

I know George Follmer was driving Rich Rodecks '69 TransAm Mustang at the Portland Oregon Historics a few years back.......and had an opportunity to drive into a corner alittle too aggressively.......and found out the other guy really did have the line. The end result was not a great amount of damage......but everyone around where I was setting had the same reaction (shaking our heads and saying what the hell???).

His agressive driving was totally off, and if I would have owned the car, he sure would have been crossed off of my Christmas Card List for sure.

He got Black Flagged, and Georgee boy got asked to leave the building.

I was just joking Ross, but seriously I'm quite sure you wouldn't have stuffed it like ol' Vern apparently did. You have been pushing your 40 and your Europa quite hard without bending them. In fact quite the opposite, you were sensing the 40's limitations and making improvements to get it reacting how you wanted.

Cheers

I think Newey also did his lightweight E Type no favours at Goodwood in the same session that Dario Franchitti did his E Type some damage! Not aware of Sir Stirling damaging any cars at Goodwood though. Might be wrong....

Didn't Ron Dennis also manage to bend a Maclaren F1 (4 seater road car one in Japan when it was beind=g displayed to journalists!?

Having been in a race with Newey and Jardine exchanging paintwork i always view his driving with great caution. Little wonder he wrecked the E Type and 40 last year.

You guys who race or follow it seem to know the drivers fairly well. We could have a new, separate thread titled "People I wouldn't lend my 40 to". Actually, how possessive are owners? Do they let others (beyond partner) drive car?

This is painful to look at, such a waste. Hopefully it can be repaired and back on the track soon, without Vern driving it.

Help me out here......

The thread is identifying car #1109. By no means do I call myself an expert, but........to me, the front and rear of the GT40 in this picture sure looks like a MkI. In addition, take a peek at the roll cage. Definately a great safety feature, but not like any I saw in any publications or books showing 40s when they were raced in the 60s.

Any other members like to add to this?.....and by all means, in the famous words of Bartells & James.......Thanks for your support!!!

I am amazed the the Porsche Factory hired such a shit driver to race their LeMans cars for all those years.!!! Why didn't they hire you Ross.

Nobody wishes to see a classic car damaged but or any car for that matter.
But as soon as you roll onto that track the chances quadrupal of something happening.

I have raced on and off over the years an if you dont want to put it at risk dont take to the track.
It does not even come down to being the best driver in these historic races they are still on period brakes ect the chances of someone running into you is high.

Anyway how do you know it was not a mechanical failure or oil on the track from some old shitter that couldnt handle it.

Over time it may filter out what happened.

Yes, indeed. Let's not hang out some very good drivers, just to beat our own chests.

Let's face it guys
The only person that knows the truth about what really happened is the driver and if he doesn't tell the whole story or admit to it then all we can do is speculate for ever and a day.
Every one has their own agenda for witholding the facts.

A couple of years ago at Goodwood, someone drove into the rear of a car the Mr. Moss was driving. It was at the start of a race and some in the back was a bit too enthusiastic. (Either that, or I have it backwards and there was a slow car that got in front of him at the start of the race)
