DESIGN of a New GT40 successor

I've been thinking for quite awhile about a new Gt40 successor, now that production of the Ford GT has ended.

If you adapt the platform/chassis sharing concept of big manufacturers, to the specialist/kitcar manufacturers, you could create different sportscars, all using the same chassis/platform.

I believe the GT40 replica chassis has a lot of potential, but what do you all think of a modern styling update for the GT40 ?, or for that matter, of any sportscar design, Lola, Porsche, Ferrari, ?

Just for fun, I will post a few rough sketches to get your feedback....:).
Ciao

Sounds like FUN! Bring it on!!!

Have you seen the GT90 Prototype? Beautiful - To me it looks like something Lamborghini would come up with but has some visual cues that bring your mind back to the GT40..

The original show car is still in Detroit and gets a airing once in a while...last time I saw it only a couple of years ago it looked very unloved and in poor repair...too bad.

Italo,
you mean like we do???;)

Fran,

You're the leader of this platform/chassis sharing concept, you have hit onto a new niche ,in the specialist replica manufacturing business.

I believe this is the future for all the GT 40 manufacturers, designing new shapes on the same chassis, from retro to modern, and this will cut deveoloping costs, being the chassis, the most expensive part of engineering when building a sportscar.

You started it all, but when someone hits on to a good idea, others will follow soon.....

I'll get back to my rough sketches for now...:)

I'we always liked the GT90, shame that it wasn't developed as the new GT40.

From these pictures, this prototype/concept car has so much appeal and it's sad that Ford have neglected it, according to Frans post. With so much resurgant interest in the GT40 and the recent run of Ford GT's I am suprised Ford has not tested the water on the 90 as well.
I wonder what Fords attitude would be if the design/concept was 'ripped' off and somebody went ahead and produced them. Sure, there are many reasons as to why it could be difficult - look at the glass for example - but nothing is insurmountable. With a slight amount of re-styling to bring it into the 21st c, it could be so, so incredibly fantastic.
But, in the words of Manoel at the Fawlty Towers Hotel - "I KNOW NOTHING ! I FROM BARTHELONA"

I totally agree with you, with a slight update the Gt90 could still become a great Ford Gt sportscar.
Maybe marketing fears halted the project, apart from some of the problems encountered with the glass roof at the time....

I had thought of chassis sharing for replica enthusiasts earlier, and emailed Peter at DRB here in Oz if he would consider using the DRB chassis in a Muira configuration, as I think it would re-body quite easily. But he replied he could hardly keep up with his Cobra and GT40 orders, so wasn't looking to start anything else. Pity.

Well, that only means that there is space in the market, for a few more GT40 replica manufacturers.!!!!

I agree that a nice Miura replica would fit into a Gt40 chassis, maybe some other manufacturer might be interested.....:)

bah..sorry guys but this time I dont agree:)

The gt90 was surely a nice concept car and is a real shame to hear she is unloved somewhere in Detroit (just hope some collector will save her and regive her love and attentions), but I think the newer Ford gt is a LOT nicer than this one, even because is a clone of the one we all love.
The design seems still actual, but broken lines are also very very easy to bore people quickly as theme can make u fall in love (look at Chris Bangle's masterpieces,so sold all around just because logged by BMW,but who wanna save the terrible Fiat Coupè?).
Probably the reason also Ford didnt want to keep gt90 to real life was cause the look is totally different that the shape coming into eyes when u say:FORD + GT...

And modern concepts and prototypes (including Fran one,as well as the GTM) are really nicer IMHO.

curves curves...always curved lines..as in gt40s..as in Cobra ass..as in Ferrari p4....and as in girls curves;)

Paolo,

I said I liked the GT90, but my very rough sketches won't look like it.....it will be a lot more retro, a thorough styling update of a GT40 replica, maybe with a cab froward windshield.....

remember this is just for fun, I don't think we will ever see my sketches become reality...:)

Will post soon.....

Ciao

never say never Italo,;)
I am sure guys as u are able to draw cars really nicer than todays ones on the road (help me in killing chris bangle, plz..).

Just be careful at Fiat people..they use to stole drawings and neither say thank u (as trepiu uno concept becoming magically the new 500)
