Radio Aerial Location

Hello... some original GT40s had a radio mounted vertically in the door.. OK. However, no one has ever been able to tell me where the aerial would be located. Remember, in the mid- 1960s, to my knowledge, there were no windscreen aerials, so the mast must have been mounted vertically.. or perhaps.. horizontally, somewhere. Any ideas? Cheers... Andrew

GT40 radios, and their aerials, should be co-located with one another.

See detailed installation photo below.

Mike: perfect response, still chuckling.

I have see pics of the radio in the Mark III as well. Wonder if they just looped wire as an antenna within the door panel since the fiberglass would not interfers with the RF signal. Good question.

Andrew,

Although Mike may well have a point, as to your question.............

I remember seeing photos back in the day of radio antennas mounted at the center/front of the spider, angled sharply back.

There is a photo in Ronnie Spain's first book, page 271. It shows P/1072, a MKI street car with what looks like this antenna.

Andrew, I don't know about 40's, with their hinged front bodywork, but I can tell you that the antenna in my Cobra replica runs horizontally under the fender from the firewall towards the front headlight on the passenger's side. Reception is adequate, but I am in a high-signal area, and have no idea what the signal would be like in a low-signal area.

Don't know if this helps or not....

Cheers!

Hi everyone. I don't plan to put a radio in P/1042, but it's a query which has baffled the best.. no more clues to whom I mean! Regards. Andrew

Hi Everyone,

Well spotted Jim, my later edition also shows a similar aerial on P/1071.

The best picture I have to hand is the colour advertisement ' Would you let your daughter marry a Ford owner' ( The blue car rather than the red one which has no aerial ).
Fitted is a chrome roof aerial as described by Jim, the kind that were popular on Lotus Cortinas, Escort Mexicos etc.
It would certainly work fine on the steel roof, the worst bit being routing & hiding the cable inside the car !

Regards Steve.

i put an small power fm antenna on the front bulk head. Small and just sticks to the bulk head. I have purchased a secret radio for the car, but never installed in 6 years of driving.
A bigger issue of where to put the speakers without hacking a big hole in each door.
