CamT's build thread

An interesting discovery this weekend -

Using an old school Radio Shack SPL meter my SLC cabin measures 100-101 dB at 60, 70, and 80 mph. It seems to be vehicle speed and engine RPM independent - but I find driving at 60mph much more pleasant than at 80mph. It must be the frequency of the noise that bothers me as actual volume levels remain unchanged.

My wife's German SUV measures 88-90 dB from 60-80mph, and it also seems to be speed independent.

Sound energy is non-linear and an increase in 3dB is a doubling of sound energy. However, most people perceive a +6dB change to be a doubling of loudness.

If anyone else has a sound meter I'd love to hear your results. My meter was set on "slow" and on "C" weighting.

That's interesting Cam. I'm kind of curious as well, I'll be glad to see if I can find a SPL meter and test mine when it returns and post back.

Enjoyable video. We have got to get together for a drive, I look forward to spring and dry roads. Mexico huh? Is that the ''Bonneville'' of Sandy Eggo? Your car runs out of revs quick, shifts really smooth. I was surprised NOT to see anyone hanging out of their car taking videos. 6:30 AM Sunday traffic, ugh.

Thanks guys - appreciate the kind feedback! If there's anything in particular someone wants to see send it over and I'll see if I can put something together. I don't really intend to make too many more videos, it's just not my thing. But it's been fun and I think more SLC content in the world is a good thing.

Mesa - I cut the portions where people were doing the slow roll with cameras out but yeah, that happens. Normally I'm driving a smidge faster than traffic but I was going slow to try and keep cabin noise down, little did I know it wouldn't do much anyway and I'm too cheap to buy a mic.

It's a real quick trip to dip down into Mexico for a speed run, back before you know it ... ;)

I started an instagram account some time ago and have been going through, posting photos here and there from the start to finish of this build. I just made my last build post today - phew! It’s a super condensed look of the entire build. If anyone on here is into IG, check it out. I’m not much for social media but will probably keep the account on low active mode and post from time to time.

Some developments ...

It seems with the cooler weather my car has tended to want to stall out more when coming to idle while stopping - I'm not sure if there's any relation to the weather or if my car is "re-learning" itself some bad manners since my tune.

Note that I also have a Dakota Digital GPS sensor feeding my VSS and my tuner spent some time working on idle quality. The DD GPS didn't do much for me but the tune made a noticeable difference. More recently it's shifted back to behaving more like it did pre-tune.

One of the things my tuner noted while I was at his shop was that he thought my MAF sensor was too close to the air filter. I have the sensor located the mandated 10" away from the throttle body and I'm using the typical 4" inlet pipe most LS motored guys are using. This places the MAF sensor about 6" or so to the air filter.

So I pulled out the angle grinder and cut my tube to bits and re-located the MAF sensor to about 6" from the throttle body. The sensor is now almost even with the forward cross-bar of the engine brace.

I took it out for a spin and it seemed like an immediate fix - slowing down to a stop, the RPM would drop down a bit and catch itself within 1 "swing". When things were bad it would surge back and forth until the engine died unless I gave it throttle. After the initial tune it would hunt/surge maybe once every 20 stops or so. Lately it's been more like once every 3 to 4 stops.

Unfortunately I didn't get to drive the car too long as the car sputtered and fell silent.

I was pretty lucky that my father-in-law was still in town (he was due to leave the next afternoon) and he was able to bring the trailer out and give me a hand. This is the first time I've been left on the side of the road, thankfully I was close to home. I was getting ready to do a ~200 mile road trip this weekend!

It happened at a pretty busy corner and I was able to get a hand pushing the car off into a side street without much difficulty. Rush hour wasn't the best time to have a breakdown!

I got to test out my tow hook - it worked like a charm!

Some video evidence of my mis-adventures! Here's a YouTube link:

Well dang, that really sucks. On the plus side, the shifting still sounded silky smooth! Hope you get it figured out and it's something easy.

On another note, was cool to see the AIM does the gear you're in. I've been curious if that'd work with the 6 speed. I'm looking forward to playing with Race Studio in hopes of creating my own gauge screen if I don't like the premade ones....although I am fond of one you're currently running.

Yeah, a real bummer. I have some ideas on what it could be, just need time to get down to the garage and check it all out.

Unfortunately Race Studio doesn't let you create your own custom gauges, you pull from the ones they have and you can change the data fields. Of the ones available, I find this to be the best for driving. There's another with a bunch of data fields that I use for troubleshooting. They have another with 2 sets of needles but I find the text to be too small. It would be totally killer if they would give us the ability to make our own displays picking from a graphics bin but that may be too advanced. All you really need are temps, speed, and a shift light anyway. Half the time you don't bother looking at speed ;)

Well Cam, I think you just convinced me to add a tow ring to my build plan.

Joel - yeah, I was on the fence about doing one too but the trailer we have makes it difficult to drive onto so we figured towing would be mandatory. The front overhang is pretty long so pulling on something like the rear diffuser would drive the front splitter into the ground, no bueno. If you have a removable tow hook like I do be sure to store it in/on the car at all times ;) I'd left mine in my garage because I was too lazy to make a mount for it.

Awe man, it appeared we could make our own gauges. At least the pre-loaded ones are decent at least. Maybe in an update we'll get the option at some point. Not likely, but we can hope!

Came across this digging around on Neidfaktor site and thought of you Cam. I actually think this may be too much carbon for your console.

I can't believe I actually used "too much" and carbon fiber in the same sentence, lol.
