Has any one looked at or used MiMod HP system?

I like the idea of this, and had thought about implementing it as they did.

However, there are several problems that I don't see addressed in their demos and web site.

For example, since it uses Windows, there is a substantial boot time before anything shows up on your dash. If you are relying on it for oil pressure, for example, and you drive away immediately assuming all is well right after you forgot to put the oil pan bolt back in, you could be out of oil before the gauges came up. That's a recipe for a Bad Day. There are optimizations, but even with SSD and a slimmed-down version of Windows, things will be coming up very slowly from a cold boot, and there are plenty of people for whom the hibernate feature causes problems in mobile apps. I don't see a way around this with Windows.

Windows also has an issue with power consumption. Even a hibernating PC takes a fair amount of power- enough to drain a battery in a couple of days. So you'll always need to keep the car on a trickle charger when it isn't moving, or become very friendly indeed with the local tow truck company if you find a dead battery on the road.

Another problem is that they show Garmin as their navigation choice. This was once a logical choice, since it can be embedded easily in a custom front-end. However, it has been discontinued for some time, and there is no explicit support for map updates, even if you do happen to find a NOS or used copy around. Do they support other choices like Sygic, etc? If so, why show a discontinued product in their demos?

If you are using one screen for instruments, you will have to either thread your fingers through the steering wheel for use the touch screen, or use some alternate input device to manage that. So there is one more piece of hardware floating around the cockpit, in addition to the risk of having to poke your fingers through the steering wheel while parking to turn on the rear camera. Do you really want to poke fingers through the steering wheel to turn on a fan at 70 MPH? Alternatively, you can have another screen in the center stack, but by the time you add that in, you are looking at a solution that will almost certainly be well over $2000, even with a group buy.

Finally, unless you are pretty good with managing drivers, playing with XML and otherwise fooling with PCs, this may not be the project for you. I'm guessing that maintenance (keeping current with fixed versions of whatever software you have installed) won't be trivial.

The only significant thing the MiMod seems to offer is explicit integration with ISIS. But ISIS says they will release a version of their InTouch software for Android, and there is already an IOS version that could be used with the new Ipad Mini.

Don't misunderstand- the idea is great for the center stack, where nav, infortainment and other non-critical things live. But for the drivers stack, I wonder if this is the right solution, even if cost is not a factor.

For context, the included Koso and a $200-400 7" tablet driving an amp and some speakers will go very far in terms of feature set (including bluetooth access to OBDII data, a very wide range of music and video players, email, browser access, etc.), have instant startup, will last for weeks without a charge, have no power consumption issues, uses off the shelf hardware that is designed for touch, and will have an installed cost that is a fraction of this approach.

Just food for thought.

I recently bought a Google Nexus 7 tablet, a PLX Devices Kiwi adapter (PLX Kiwi Bluetooth | OBD2 OBDII Android), and the Torque and Dash Command Android apps to try on my daily driver. I mounted the tablet in the dash cluster in front of the OEM gauges to see how well it would work as a primary display. After a couple weeks of driving I've determined it's not a suitable setup.

Using the Torque app (Torque — OBD2 Performance and Diagnostics for your Vehicle), the gauges are just too small to be easily readable and there is a slight lag in the needles. Lag in the speedo isn't much of a problem, but the lag in the tach is borderline for high performance driving.

The Dash Command app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.palmerperformance.DashCommand) has lots of options for gauge layouts with bigger dials and has free software to create custom gauges faces. However, even being a powerpoint wizard, I could not figure out how to use the software. The gauge lag with Dash Command is really bad and makes it absolutely unusable for primary displays.

Another option I've been looking at is Pioneer's nav systems with Advanced App Mode. App Mode | Pioneer Electronics USA) It's a stereo/DVD/Nav system that also runs iPhone or Android Apps. Dash Command is one of the supported apps, so you could display auxiliary gauges and engine diagnostics on the system. The top of the line model, AVIC-Z140BH is $790 on Amazon - [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B006Y444T4/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new"]Amazon.com: Used and New: Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH 2DIN 7" Touchscreen In-Dash Navigation AV Receiver[/ame]

good to see some feed back I think its time for Troy to sign up to this forum and this tread as he can answer these questions I am sure easier then me as a middle man being I have yet to see the Mimod in person.

Will the in front of Driver screen with the Speedo and the Tach etc.. would not be the touch screen it will be a gauge cluster only so there wouldn't be any poking your fingers through the steering wheel. it will only show gauges here is an example Troy has sent me just to give you an idea of what it could look like. all the controls will be done in the middle console screen.

Switchs I don't think anything that is currently done at the steering column should be changed, headlights, hi beam low and signals should be left there for quick and easy.
Two fuel pumps switches, ECM, rad cooling fans over ride. oil cooler fans, Electric side mirrors toggle, interior light, AC and heat controls and blower speed. optional electric emergency brake, line loc. horn ? although I think this still belongs on the steering wheel.

Rather on topic:

Linux Foundation forms Automotive Grade Workgroup, aims to open-source your ride with Tizen -- Engadget

I would never use a PC for it, I would always use a laptop or x86 based tablet, permanently connected to it's charger.

When the power is cut to the power supply, you initiate STAND BY on the laptop/tablet, they can last for days and days on their internal battery (thus no external drain) plus, even with my badly configured old laptop, I'm looking at my Windows 7 login screen by the time I've opened my laptop lid.

Hello everyone

My name is Jamie Walters I am the director of sales for MiMod HP.
I also had a hand in developing the system. I can help you with any questions you may have. Lets start with some basics.

MiMod was designed as a touch control interface between the driver and vehicle. It is capable of controlling or displaying any information you need or want. I say this without exaggerating. We have yet to find something we are unable to do with MiMod.
It comes standard with 32 user programable I/O's and that can be upgraded, although we have never seen anyone reach and use the 32 on our standard system.
The standard system comes with a 7" console mounted touch screen that can be mounted vertical or Horizontal if need (specify when ordering). We also can run multi screen setups if needed as well.
Our system comes standard with Wifi, HD radio, Accelerometer computer, OBII or OB3 capable, data logging capable, Mp3 and entertainment utility to watch movies and play Music etc..., GPS, security curtain log in which disables the vehicle until the driver enters his/hers code pass on the screen.
We can and have run Air ride Tech systems, F.A.S.T EFI, Vintage Air Gen 4/5 systems etc...
The truth is that MiMod is the most powerful and diverse system of it's kind available to the aftermarket bare none.
MiMod also offers our an upgrade (add on) to our "ahead of driver Display" which is a digital gauge cluster that YOU design with out tech department. This allows you to have the gauge cluster of your dreams and one that no one in the world has but you. Your car is one of a kind, and so should your dash be.. right? Everything from the shape of the gauges, to what gauges are displayed and what colors are used are completely in your control.
MiMod is also plug and play with ISIS. We have worked closely with Jay to make sure our systems integrate flawlessly.
Another cool feature is that with the WIFI connection and data logging , you can set the system to down load all the info to your home computer as soon as it arrives in the garage... yeah that cool. You can also down load pics and graphics onto the MiMod through this same feature.
Did I mention we also have a app for Droid so you can control you car from your phone? O' and we are working on an Apple app as well.

MiMod uses a embedded windows 7 system. It however only runs our operating system so it's response is much faster than your home or laptop computer.
MiMod goes into sleep mode when the car is off and only draws about 3v which means you can leave your car for weeks and have no battery issues. This allows MiMod to boot almost instantly when the driver returns to the vehicle. When storing for the winter or extended periods of time we suggest shutting the system down from the utility screen. It will only take about 10-20 seconds to reboot from being totally off.

So thats some very basic info on the systems. Feel free to ask questions.

Thank you
Jamie

Troy has send me a price for the center screen price based on a five unit buy in. It will be less if you should remove some options.

MiMOD

Hi Grant
Yes those prices are correct. I think everyone will want the systems loaded since it allows them to expand later if they choose.
They can active or de-activate any of the options for the utilities screen so they can use them if their needs change.

Thanks
Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Welcome to GT40s.com. I realize that you're responding to posts here about the system and that is fine, but you might not be aware that we offer vendor/advertising memberships here on the forum that you may be interested in. The details of these memberships are here:

http://www.gt40s.com/forum/site-que...onsoring-vendors-how-advertise-gt40s-com.html

A vendor membership is needed to post about wares for sale. Banner advertisements are also available if needed.

Thank you,
Ron

Hi Ron

Yes I figured that may be the case which is why I did not want to list a bunck of pricing and things of that nature.
I had one for your members come over to the pro touring site and ask us here because they are considering a group buy on our systems and wanted to get some questions answered. If your o.k with us addressing these questions that would be great. If things work out for us we may indeed become a sponsor.

Thanks Ron.
Jamie

I have read over most of the post here. So I will give a few more answers.

If you decide to go with ahead of driver gauge clusters, the set of screens used for this are not touch. As mentioned in a pervious post, it would be dangerous to reach through the steering wheel to reach it. All the touch commands and switches are located on the 7" center console or if you choose multi center console screens.
There is no lag in our gauge clusters. They respond quickly and accurately.
Also with our gauge clusters you get to design your own gauges and layouts. The sky is the limit, if you want your gauge to look like a guy hiking up a hill... it can be done.
If you want nightrider... yep, or if you just have this dream gauge cluster in your head, this is how you can make it reality.
Troy did not list all the options we are including in the group buy. The systems are LOADED with every option we have. You will also have an on board accelerometer
which gives you rest 0-60, braking distance, G force, HP and torque ratings ext. You can use these when data logging... yes it has that as well. Also WIfi, and blue tooth.
Normally we sell each of these options individually. But we are giving this group these options as well. The actual saving for the buy is closer to 650-700 dollars per unit
when you consider the back up camera, MP3 entertainment utility and GPS.

Jamie

Thank you Jamie, I am the member that asked you orginally about your product and a possile group buy over here.

Ron I hope this did not cause an issue, if it does I am sorry.

I am interested in one of the units if we do a group purchase.

Hi Rebecca
Yes, it took awhile to get over here but I made it. Waiting for questions but nothing yet. Grant and Troy have been talking, and I have been working with Troy to get you guys what you need and more importantly what you want. I think our system will be perfect for you guys.

Thanks
Jamie

Hello Jamie I'll be looking for one, I want to see what you guys come up with for the center console. There will be a little space left over at the top of the screen,
Im wondering if a start engine button should be place there ? and or a radar detection system something like the escort 9500 ?
Cheers,
Grant

Hi Grant

A start button is no problem at all. As for the radar detection system, very interesting and believe it or not a first for us. I assume it can be done easily since all we are talking about is a sensor. The cool thing would be how you display the information. You could have a set of red and blue lights flash when the radar detects. The details of that would need to be discussed with Troy since it sounds like we would have to write some programming to implement it.
We are being sent a complete dash by SLC so we can mess around with it and get a system that fits perfectly. Should be pretty awesome when it's done.

SEMA

So we are set to go to SEMA next month. We will be in the Grand Auditorium with Goodwin Assist showcasing MiMod. This is the place to be and we are very excited to go. This is our first trip to SEMA and we have been asked to attend and show off MiMod. If any of you are there stop by, say hi and check out the system.

Jamie

FYI...

I've decided not to join the group buy of MiMod.

In a world of $99 Android tablets and $300 touch screen car radios (that include back up camera, GPS, etc), the $2300+ for MiMod is more than its worth to me.

Peace:bow:

I'm sure that has nothing to do with the fact that 2 of the 3 items in your list are mass-manufactured by slave labor by multiple billion-dollar competitors while the third is a unique product in a niche market from a small company ;)
