Keith Baker's Southern gt on the build

Mark, 1502 H.P. 1200 Lbs Torque weight 950 kg and I drove the Audi R15 in the Le mans 240 hr and came 4th , STILL fancy your chances !

F**K Yeah! natural talent geezer can work bloody miracles don't you know! :) Plus of course, you'll have to keep pitting to change rear tyres!!! Or do you simply plan on obscuring my view with all that clutch and tyre smoke???!!! ;)

Hi Mark, I bin jesting with you man.
I'm 92 years old next week and not even sure if I can get in the 40.
Me and Mick at SGT went to school together we're the same age give or take.
Not as old as Frank Catt though.
I would probably be well behind you on the circuit as me eyesight aint what it used to be.
I have always been a Ford man, and I was quick many years ago though I used to race a model T ford without success.
Anyway nice to chat, I've got to have me afternoon nap now.
Cheerio.

Bad news.
I have had a small but niggling problem with a constantly on warning lamp.
After chasing this fault today I had a problem and suddenly smoke was coming from the loom before I could disconnect the power I had a BBQ going on.
Traced two wires that had overheated but one being an earth wire it had travelled through the loom up to a connector and seems to have not gone further.
BUT other wires were stuck to the knackered ones.
I will look at the loom in more detail tommorrow but the best route may be to replace the dash centre loom... don't want to take any risks.
B******S is the words that come to mind.
The wife nearly watched a grown man cry.
One step forward, two back.

Bad luck Keith.

Having recently seen my wife's Fiesta go up in smoke I understand how you feel.

I'm sure you will get it fixed and if it is any consolation it will still be years before mine is at the same point, and you started years after me. :)

Hi Keith,
That's a real bummer and I feel for you. There's nothing worth than having to redo something that you've already done.

Prior to connecting everything up on my harness, I've been recommended to fit a fuse in the main battery harness. Start will a small one (say 10A) to check individual circuits, then progressively increase the fuse rating until all circuits are working together. This method would have highlighted your current problem.

Look it as good thing, at least it was in the workshop and not in the middle of nowhere!
Regards,
Andy

With reference to the short circuit yesterday I stripped the loom back today and the damage DID only go back as far as the connector plug but there was sufficient local burn damage for me to not take a chance. So the centre dashboard loom is now gone and the risk of a short later is also gone.
What's the plan... Get a new section of loom or if I have to get a new complete loom.
The car looks a bit empty under the dash but what the heck it's a bit of money and bit of labour. It will set the IVA back a bit but hopefully the parts will be available and I always have things to do.
Started on the bracketry for the oil catch tanks at the rear of the car and had a really good clean up of car and garage... then shed a little tear ... BOO HOO.

After having a short circuit in my brain I decided to machine a new steering boss for the quick release and the Moto Lita incorprating the Ford GT emblem.
Although all the machining is done and the wheel is finished I will need to get some tapered black bolts of the correct length.
I'm going to the Kit car show at Detling, Kent tommorrow for a couple of hours before all the family come round for diner, so may pick some up there.

Pictures are various stages.

Also made the brackets for the oil catch tank passenger side.
Not sure if I will extend the drivers side flex to the same tank or fit another tank.
Probably fit another and blank off the spare hole.
This tank is 1 Ltr capacity and fits well in the space.
Purchased from Car builder solutions and is made of thicker ally plate so the welds have not distorted the metal. I think thin ally welded looks crap.

The black hoses are Goodrich 210 series hoses, good for fuel , oil and water.
There not so heavy duty as stainless but if had used my noddle I would have used them throughout the plumbing not just the oil lines.
There much easier to put the fittings on and more flexible.
I would suggest that anyone at that stage of the build buy a length and see what I mean.
Demon Tweeks amongst others sell it.

Managed to fit the second oil catch tank today and a few other little jobs.

Fitted the new loom although since I purchased my loom they have updated it slightly.
Only had to modify one connector block as the wires were configured differently.
All's well and a quick test with a fuse in the line most things work and the original fault of the main beam lamp has gone away. I'm not sure that there was not an original wiring error on the first loom but that's history now.
I need to sought the indicator flasher out as well as a fans switch wire but SGT said leave it till they have the car, so be it, Adam knows what to do.
Fitted up the air con ducting and an additional Fused power supply for the H.P. pump.
Tanks in for the last time ( probably not ) and earth straps fitted.
When building these cars at the early stages you forget how little space there will be at the end. Shoe horn most things in.
Windscreen will hopefully be fitted next week by a national co. @ £ 72 incl vat which I dont think is too sad, although I have fitted screens myself in the past.
The painter is coming over tommorrow to give me the bad news £

Painters been and gone. He WILL be painting the car although he's by far not the cheapest but I know his work.. And he knows what I will want from him.
You can paint these cars so they look good at a relatively good price but the body on my car is at least 5 years old, well and truly cured but in the wrong light theres ripples all over the place. To get them looking top dog you need to prepare them 110% and there's plenty of block sanding to do which adds to the time and cost.
I have a few crappy areas that will need working on , just as my first GTD 40 did 13 years ago but that's the nature of fibre glass. My painter specialises in corvettes so is well aware of how fibre glass needs painting and baking. It's not rocket science but needs to be done correctly.
Race cars need not be so fussy but road cars need that bit more.
The painter want the car for 2 months,,, so be it.
Colour scheme is decided:
As I said same as my 61 Harley, hard to explain but Maroon with 4 off white roundels, no stripes down the middle but off white cill stripes. Black inserts for the lights and around the rear deck under the glass, Black wheels.
The colour when the sun hits it is a brilliant shade of dark red.
Anyway the way things are going it's months away from paint.
My original plan was to be on the road by now, that's gone up the swanny.

" What's the rush " is my new attitude.. Summers coming.

Forgot to mention, I have moved the position of some gauges and switches.
The switches arranged more to the right to be within the 127mm IVA rules,
This meant extending the wires as the looms are a bit shorter than they could be.
I will tell Mick at SGT about this as adding a couple of inches to the branch off wires would be a benifit.. even if not moving anything. " We could all do with a couple of inches more ".
If anyone is at the stage of wiring and they need to extend and want the matching colour and size of cable, I have them and you can have some. Keeps everything the same as the circuit diagram !

Not done a lot in the last few weeks, what with the wiring problem It gave me a balls ache so sat back and had a rest, also bought myself another bike 1967 Triumph Bonniville T120R. It's the dogs dangly bits. A sought of comfort thing to console myself !
Anyway air con man came and we decided to install some ally tube at the front around the condensor rad area, should make it neater going under the main radiator, he will get the parts needed and I will have that done in a couple of weeks as I'm of to Spain for a week
At the air con pump area it's tight for the pipes and somewhere the gas filling points have got to go in so he's getting 90 degree angles out of the pump with integral fill connectors, We'll see if that works out well !
Having the screen fitted tomorrow, roughed up the fibreglass edges to get a good bonding.
Fitted the other rear grill, that's done now except had to trim the left edge a bit and one hole needs welding and moving over 3mm,thought I'd say just in case someone notices it. decide whether to polish it or paint it later.
Lastly trimmed the inside of the rear body to miss the suspension arms etc on full travel.
