OMG!

They were using survival bags known as "Shake and Bakes" (you shake the bag out of the rolled up posistion and bake in them)

They are intended as a "last resort" survival aid. The theory is you lay flat in them and the air captured provides breathing oxygen as well a some insulation while the fire travels over you. I don't know what what actually happened in Arizona but I am told odds are that they suffocated rather than burned due to the fires removal of oxygen.

That is truly awful. It is hard to imagine how their families are feeling about such a nightmare happening to their loved ones. So sorry for everyone at the loss of so many brave people.

What's terrifying is how fast a wildfire can change direction. What's astonishing is that after this tragedy there are still four hundred men and women out there taking the exact same risks. THAT is balls, I don't care what gender they are. I am not that brave. I am awestruck by anyone who is. That is courage.

truly a very sad day, for a whole team to perish is beyond comprehension, the only thing I can say is that they didn't suffer, as someone has already stated they would have slumped into unconsciousness well before they suffered to much, as the fire consumes all available oxygen. I can only feel compassion for the loved ones left and the sole survivor must be going through hell poor sod.

Time and time again this is happening around the globe, why is there no massive drive to get the fire breaks carved through these forests and around the small towns that are built within them. I read that these flame can flash across three hundred meter gaps, why not cut them a mile wide if thats the solution. Lives, wildlife and homes would all benefit from some simple engineering solutions. Its probably just down to money.

Its a shame really because most of these fires are caused by the greater unwashed population that think its ok to discard fag butts and bottles out of the windows of their moving cars.

Indeed Bob, however, many such fires are deliberately started...we suffer this every year in the ambit of the New Forest.... and I believe that some recent destructive fires in Australia were thus caused. Perhaps Peter could chime in with the veracity of that..

I sincerely hope it was not so in this particular situation.. :uneasy:

Quite true Keith, each summer many bush fires are started deliberately in Australia. It is hard to imagine what motivates the the imbeciles that do so.
