So this kind of sums it up doesn't it?
Given that, the Paddock has become a kind of gentleman's club in it's truest sense and was an extremely enjoyable experience to read and post in. Some members became incensed enough with poltical issues to post prime examples of political bad behaviour for all to learn from. No-one challenged these relevations because, as brothers, we were all victims of it.
I'm not posting my thoughts on this for Keith and David, but for others who might read this. So let's translate: "I'm am angry because 'before' me and a bunch of guys who look and thought like me could post stuff in the paddock that basically went like this:
1. Muslims are terrorists! +1! Post of the day! Check!
2. President Obama is a commiefascistmuslimKenyan! +1! Post of the day! Check!
3. The thousands of scientists who think the earth is warming are frauds..
and everyone agreed."
And so on. That's fine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Here's the rub though. Quote: "No one challenged these relevations because, as brothers, we were all victims of it."
I see. So, when someone did find some of what was being posted here wrong, or offensive, or just at a minimum debatable, questioning what the "brotherhood" -- read older white caucasian Christian conservative -- thought was right, that is "forum fascism." Check. Got it.
That's the core of it isn't it? A few of you guys -- a few -- David, Keith, Al, a few others -- wanted a place where you could freely post how much you disliked Muslims, or whatever. And when others questioned that, you felt like sand was being kicked in your sandbox.
Ok. If this were
ihatemuslims.com: The Leading I Hate Muslim Site on the Net, fine. I could see why questioning some of your beliefs would be out of line. Since this is a car forum, with an "anything goes" paddock, I don't. It's a bit ironic, isn't it, that folks who pride themselves on being anti-PC or who believe in free and open speech get THAT offended when an opposing viewpoint is posted.
And to say this started with Norway? Please. From the day I started visiting this forum in 2006 -- because it was my friend's forum, and because I enjoy discussin cars with guys like Fran, or racing with Malcolm and Glenn -- the Paddock has been post after post after post of stuff like the above. The Norway thread got Keith all twisted because a few of us dared to suggest that it was evidence that not all terrorists were Muslim, and in fact white male conservative Christians could also engage in acts of terror and senseless violence.
Have I been sarcastic? Sure. Did Al's insistence that all people who took government benefits other than him were lazy bums were scum bother me? Yep. But in the same vein, did the thread after thread of anti-Muslim stuff really -- in my view -- cast this forum in a bad light? Yep.
Club of gentlemen? Some might see it that way. Many others did not, and do not.
If you want to talk cars and racing, love to do it. Wish we could do it without the politics, I would really rather NOT know what your political bent is. If you want to talk politics with people who think about politics just like you, there are plenty of forums on both sides for that.
Last, the "pin the blame on the Americans" is a bit much, no? I'll grant you some of the more vociferous stuff came from this side of the pond, but the old English subtlety (and I love the UK and the people there) can be just as biting and offensive....
And no, no GT40 for me. Mopar guy. 72 Charger. And Britcar guy. Triumph race car and various Loti over the years.
